"E jfcTHE PIHEHURST OUTLOOKgg 5; RALEIGH CHARMING CITY Becoming Rendezvous More and More for Northern Visitors. jttasniticent Oaks, PrUy Home, jlroad Street and Point of In. ti'rent ConiIcuou Feature. rOUTIIERN cities of the best type have a peculiar interest for northern vis itorsl and because of this and its close proximity to Pinehurst, the city of Kaleigh is claiming attention from vis itors bore in increasing numbers each year. The special feature of Raleigh which will at once impress the visitor, is its wealth of magnificent oaks, pretty homes and broad, clean streets; but a closer ac quaintance will attract attention to its schools, libraries and public buildings, for the city is easily the centre of the State and "one of the few cities in the South so fully equipped, in this partic ular. Among the prominent colleges here is the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, devoted to technical training along these lines, and two colleges for the higher education of the colored race; Shaw University and the St. Augustine Normal School. There are also three colleges for women, St. Mary's College, Peace Institute, and the Baptist Univer sity. The University of North Carolina, one of the oldest universities 'in the United States, is but twenty-eight miles distant from the city. ' The libraries are numerous, and promi nent among them is the State library containing many thousand volumes of valuable books, manuscripts, and numer ous portraits of prominent men. As a reference library and collection of im portant documents, it is without doubt one of the best in the South, and is fre quently consulted by those desiring his toric data. The Olivia Paney circulating library is centrally located and well equipped. The Mate Museum in the Agricultural Building has a most interesting feature in the department known as the Hall of History. Under the management of Col. L A. Olds :l splendid collection lias been gathered together including loan exhibits of heirlooms, valuable relics of revolu tionary times and the "old South", rare documents, and the like. The state institutions include Dix Hill Hospital, lor the insane, Institution for the Blind, the state Penitentiary, and public buildings, the State Capitol, Hupreme (-oul.t Building, Agricultural Building, :nd Executive Mansion. llle a""sements are varied, including a modern pera house, at which high-class companies are seen during the. winter season. special feature is made of mus liod unions. The stores are many aud wUl '"'t crest the northerner. ii!le '""''"""'able drives which open up ltaleigb are among its leading attrac- aj-.ii macadamized roads lead to auy l)ulrl of historic and other inter est and give one a glimpse of the quaint colonial houses in the suburbs and their vine-covered porches, as well as bits of negro life which can be found in huts of the suburbs. Exceptionally fortunate is Raleigh in its hotel accommodations and northerners who have their ideas of southern hotels firmly fixed by many and painful experi ences, will find the New Yarborough ho tel a revelation. Landlord Howell Cobb has furnished the house with intelligence born of long years of experience with the very best class of people, and with this he has combined a sense of the artistic and the fitness of things which produces a most delightful impression. In addition to the large oilice, comfortable public rooms, there are numerous elegantly fur nished suits with bath, and delightful private dining rooms. For some, time past the hotel has been a rendezvous for numerous parties from Pinehurst who desired to enjoy an even ing at the theatre, a special dinner, or a change of scene, and many travellers are stopping over here on their way to and from the south. Manager Cobb has also leased the New Park Hotel, and he looks forward to mak ing Raleigh quite a winter resort centre owing to its moderate climate which is compared with that of Rome, Southern California, Mexico, Spain and Italy. r. and 5tm.
