PA GE THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK gate and a huge stone wall barring his entrance to a park. Surely this must be the candy forest, or why would so much pains be taken to keep people out, particularly small boys, he pondered, as he peered in through the bars, tryiiig hard to locate the choco late drop trees among the rest. Then he sought an entrance into the enchanted forest, finally getting in through a small gate. With a merry cry he darted forward, but try as he would he could not find the candy trees and the chocolate drop trees in particular. But they must be here, he thought, for this is surely the candy forest, so onward he gaily romped, but no sign of a candy tree ; not even a pep permint drop tree in which he had no interest whatever, could he find. Then it occurred to him that the dainties might be hidden in the tree tops and so he gazed long and earnestly up among the bare branches, wondering why candy should flourish when the leaves were gone. An iron settee in the sunlight, attracted him and he clambered up. He would rest a while and search again. The little head drooped forward. Wolf slept. The enchanted candy forest was all about him ! He romped merrily, gathering lus cious chocolates and bon bons, trampling peppermints underfoot ! F And while Wolf romped in the Dream Candy Forest all the great city sought him. Presently two burly policemen stopped beside the settee. "This looks like the b'y, now," re marked one of them. "The very fellow. Poor kid, he is tired to death.1" Great strong arms gathered the little form against a broad breast and two blue-coated officers seated themselves. Wolf did not awaken at once, but the constant changes of position to which he was subjected, though gentle, soon began to tell on his consciousness. He opened his eyes and saw himself in the arms of the big policeman, and it seemed so strange he was sure he must be in fairy land. He was not afraid, for he knew no fairy would hurt him. The officer saw him open his eyes and spoke : "Well, Johnny, how do you feel after your sleep "My name isn't Johnny," answered Wolf. "Then what could it be. I wonder if I could guess." "Try," said Wolf, interested at once. "Katzenjammer." "No." "Buster Brown." "No." "Wolf Logan." "That's it." And Wolf clapped his hands. "How did you know V" "Oh, people who wear stars like this know everything." Wolf gazed at the policeman's star in wonder. "Do youkuow whether those are choc olate drop trees V" "Chocolate drop trees ? What's that ?" "Why candy trees ; where the choco late drops grow." The big policeman laughed. "Well, I shouldn't wonder. Here, Mike, go out under the trees over there and see if you can find any chocolate drops." He tossed the other policeman a coin and the latter sauntered oft' under the trees. After awhile, as the other police man talked to him, he lost sight of the searcher after candy, but it was not long till he returned, and, sure enough, he had a bag full of chocolate drops. "So you found them, Mike, did you?" asked his companion. "That's just what I did," returned the other. "Candy trees in Fairyland, Mike. Isn't that right?" "I don't know as to that, but here are the trees and the candy, and I saw a beautiful fairy while I was gone." Then Wolf was certain he had found the chocolate drop trees, and when the policemen took him home he was chat tering to them and munching chocolate drops quite contentedly, and when the household met him with such demonstra tions of joy he was sure he had done something very wonderful.
