SO JE. Ilain Street,

Wen Hooka at the library.
Since the opening of the Library there
has been anxious inquiry as to the com
ing of new books. Up to this date all
that could be said was that they were
"on the way," like Gilpin's hat and wig.
But now; they are here! Here with
their fresh new covers and inviting illus
trations !
Do you wish to read for yourself and
decide whether "The House of Mirth"
deserves either the praise or the censure
attached to it? You will find it in red
and gold ready for you unless some
speedier visitor has seized upon it. Do
you wish to to be warmed by "The
Divine Fire" and fanned by "The Breath
of the Gods" ? Would you cross the Alps
when "The rrincess Passes" or travel in
an automobile with "My Friend the
Chauffeur"? Does not "Barbara" tempt
you with her dainty sandwiches served
"At the Sign of the Fox" ? Can you cast
up "The Beckoning" with Bobert Cham
bers, or do you prefer to visit "Starve
crow Farm" with Stanley Weyman? Per
haps you may choose to enter "The
Garden of Allah," or to sail "Under
Booking Skies." If none of these move
you, you may become "A Wanderer in
Holland," or a pilgrim "Among French
Inns." When weary with your journey
ing, you may devote yourself to Van
Dyke's "Essays in Application" or laugh
ever "The Pardoner's Wallet."
. The children will be glad to enlarge
their acquaintance with Sara Creewe in
"A Little Princess," and their eyes
will shine as they look at "The Bed Book
of Bomance," and "Days of Chivalry."
.These are not half the good things in
store for those who visit the Library !

A Daughter of the South.
It seems a pity that in "A Daughter of
the South," by George Cary Eggleston,
(Lothrop, Lee Shepard Co.,) the author
has failed to carry out the promise which
"A Carolina Cavalier" gave. There is no
reason why "A Daughter of the South"
should not have been a fine story. The
plot is not hackneyed. The author's
style and diction are for the most part
good. The hero, presumably we must
call the "leading gentleman" the hero,
though in most books he is far from
heroic is of a somewhat unusual type.
But the character drawing is far below
the author's standard. Two deeply dyed
villains are brought out for our inspec
tion. One gives promise of real life, and
his threats, muttered in conversation
with himself, give promise of dead loads
of trouble for the aforesaid hero ; but he
is forgotten somewhere in the tale, and
never reappears, nor does his threatened
trouble materialize.
The other villain is a beautiful animal,
some six feet or more in height, with
handsome features and a frame which is
r
