Princes Priacllla' Fortnight.
"The Princess Priseilla's Fortnight,"
by the author of "Elizabeth and Her
German Garden" (Chas. Scribners'Sons)
is a book w hich cannot fail to both please
and interest the reader. I magine a beaut i
f ul young princess, who has been brought
up in one of the smaller German courts,
who has been accustomed all her life to
adulation, flattery and the closest super
vision, becoming tired of the monotony
of court life and running away to escape
a marriage which has been decided upon
by her father; imagine, as a further
complication, that she goes in charge of
an old librarian, who has had charge of
her education since childhood, and whose
deep learning in books is only equaled by
his dense ignorance of the world and its
ways. That would seem to be a sufficient
frame work upon which to build adven
tures of many sorts, laughable and pa
thetic. The ill-matched pair make their
escape from the court in disguise and
mounted upon bicycles, are able to pre
serve their incognito until they obtain
refuge in an out-of-the-way English vil
lage, where the young men of the town
proceed to fall in love with the beautiful
princess, and where she, by her well
meaning but ill-devised charities succeeds
in almost wrecking the town. Of course
the deserted lover at length finds her
disgusted with the simple life, takes her
back to court, marries her and they live
happily forever after. But the charm of
the story is not in the plot, but in the
telling of it, and the quaint humor which
runs through it all, makes it delightful.
