A thirty-six hole professional match play best ball contest between Profes sionals Gilbert Nicholls and Jack Jolly and the Ross brothers, interested a big gallery recently, the fermer pair pull ing through winners upon the thirty sixth hole by a score of one up. Nicholls and Jolly had the match well in hand at the end of the morning round with a score of three up, twelve of the eighteen holes being halved, and they kept their lead well in the afternoon having their opponents four down and five to play at the thirty-first, when the local pair made a brilliant rally, reducing trie score to one down at the sixteenth the seventeenth and eighteenth being naived, the match being lost on the home. green by the failure of Donald to make a long putt which refused to go down by a very narrow margin. A high wind added several strokes to the cards, which but for that would have been verv low. The cards : NICHOLLS AND JOLLY. - MORNING. Out-4 5 3 4 4 4 5 3 5-37 In 43445454 53875 AFTERNOON. The first of Miss Elizabeth Olney's " Library Talks," Friday evening, drew together a congenial and appreciative audience which augurs well for the series. If a long line of distinguished ancestors is coveted by members of our patriotic societies, said Miss Olney, what must be the pride of one who can boast that his family lived for generations in Ifoyal Winchester, with its nineteen hundred years of existence. The Winchester schoolboy can dig up early Roman relics in his own garden he might even find a weapon belonging to one of Julius Caesar's legions if he went deep enough. He can see in the cathedral the tombs of the early Saxon kings. The great Alfred went to school in Winchester, his teacher being the famous Bishop Swithin who became later the patron saint of the Cathedral, Having beard that if it rains on St. Swithin's Day July 15 it is liable to rain for the next forty days we are glad that his birthday did not . chance to be the early part of this week. Here in Winchester lived and reigned William the Norman, William his son, and many of his successors. Here was founded five hundred years ago the first of the great public schools of England, which is still flourishing. Winchester Cathedral is the longest one in Europe except St. Peter's at Rome, and no other English Church is so rich in monuments except Westminster Abbey. Fine photographs added much to the interest of the lecture. This is Miss Olney's third season of library talks, and Royal Winchester certainly proved an auspicious beginning to the present course.
