PAGE THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK FROG RETRIEVES GOLF BALLS MISS KATE C. UA1ILY. WKWSB (Concluded from age 2.) "Presently the frog rose before me, bowed and gurgled : 'Must-go-hum,' and :i seme of sorrow crept over me. " 'Sorry old chap,' I replied, 'but you must let me do something for you in re turn for your kindness." 'The bright eyes lighted with pleas ure. 'Jug-o-rum V was the response and, strange it may seem, his meaning sud denly dawned upon me. Mr. Bull Frog wanted something besides water to drink; a very natural desire. '"You shall have it tomorrow night,' I replied, lighting a cigarette, 'till then, good night,1 and I bowed gravely. " 'Sinoke-um-sum,' was the reply as my salutation was returned, and the ex tended hand left no room for doubt as to its meaning. "I passed over the smoking roll and placing it between his lips, the frog jumped into the pond and swam swiftly towards the inlet, his head held high above the water, the blue smoke curling away behind him. "Stooping, I spread the balls out in piles of a dozen each. Fourteen piles in all and two over; nearly all of them in perfect condition. Something like seventy-live dollars, I estimated, in return for one cigarette and a promised jug of rum. Gee! "Hut the problem was to get them to the hotel. My pockets would surely hold :i fair share, I figured; the lest I could hide in the bushes beside the old rosin tee. "I stooped. Suddenly the piles seemed to all run together, becoming one mon ster ball which I grasped and tried to lift, but which kept dragging me down, down ! "Then I awoke to find myself half out of bed, head downward, with my arms tightly clasped around a pillow. A loud knocking on the door greeted me. 'It's eight o'clock, sir,' said a voice, 'and Mr. Smith says to tell you that you are to meet him at the first tee at nine.' " The Annuul Chrifttma Trei, The usual Christmas trees for the white and negro children, to be held at The Harvard, Monday and Tuesday evenings, are anticipated as a feature of the week to come. Guests are invited to attend the exercises connected with the tree for the negro children, but the tree for the white children will be pri vate in its character. Subscriptions to the fund have been generous, but additional sums can be utilized. Money may be left at The Holly Inn desk or with Mrs. II. W. Ormsbee at the Hale cottage. Plncliurnt'n Santa Clau. Pinehurst's Santa Claus,Express Agent I. If. Richardson, just at the present time, is the most popular man in the Village, and everybody is looking for him. A genuine Holiday smile he wears and extra hours are a pleasure because he is giving pleasure to others. JPlnehurNt Golfer Winner of Ilig-ueat American lion or. Throughout the entire year Pine hurst golfers are now in the public eye, new honors coming to them annually, but none more gratifying than the win ning of the United States Women's cham pionship by Miss Kate C. Harley of Fall River, Mass., whose visit here is pleas antly remembered by a large circle of acquaintances. Miss Harley, who was playing in ex cellent form while here, has improved rapidly during the past few years, grad ually forging to the front rank among members of the fair sex who annually compete for the highest golf honors in the gift of America. With a former world's champion, an open champion, a western champion, and a dozen other important wins, Pine hurst's colors now float throughout the land high up with other championship pennants. KIM HENCE OF IITEUESI. Mr M. I. Fink Send Outlook Check tor Children' Vhiun Fund. Mr. M. D. Fink of New York, whose long sojourn here last winter is pleas antly remembered by a large circle of ac quaintances, in remitting for subscrip tion to The Outlook also enclosed a check for five dollars to be credited to the Children's Christmas Fund, evidence of kindly interest in the welfare of the Village which is much appreciated by the committee in charge. In this particular Mr. Fink establishes a precedent which should become gen eral and for every dollar added to this subscription means happiness in homes which would not know of it but for the thoughtfulness of Pinehurst's guests. The Outlook will be glad to receive all such subscriptions and hopes that the practise may become general. . f- --an ii in fiirr'iii,"H:'WiMi tiwiiitiiiti muf " MISS M. M.
