Clark, Pinehurst's oldest and most enthusiastic golfer, was pleasantly observed Wednesday evening at the Magnolia, where Mr. and Mrs. Clark and their son, Noyes D. Clark, aro spending the winter. This is Mr. Clark's ninth season at Pinehurst. Every pleasant day finds him on the golf course for his usual eighteen holes, and it speaks well for the Village that some seasons he has played eighteen holes on one hundred consecutive days, barring Sundays. The celebration of Mr. Clark's, birth day was really begun in the morning, when guests found the dining room prettily decorated with carnations and roses. Tu the evening the guests and a few of Mr. Clark's friends from other hotels, assembled in the parlors. On a line across the back parlor were sus pended some thirty packages, and each guest, after being blindfolded and turned around several times, was given a stick and told to select a present by touching some package with the stick. This created much amusement, as each gift was concealed by several paper wrappings. There was a large variety of articles, including pictures, toys, bric-a-brac, etc. Mr. Seltzer drew a doen golf balls, and Mr. Clark im mediately advised him to get a set of clubs and enjoy the game. An enormous birthday cake, surrounded with eighty-one lighted candles and "sparklets",was the feature of the even ing. 1'efreshments were served nd then Mr. L. C. Hopkins of Brooklyn, with appropriate words in behalf of the guests, presented Mr. Clark with a hand some scarf pin. In returning thanks Mr. Clark said that he should always treasure the gift as a reminder of this pleasant anniversary, and he expressed the hope that all present would reach his age in as good health as he had. All ioined in singing "Auld Lang Syne" and then said good night. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. L. c. Hopkins, Mrs. II. Erwin, Mrs. F. II. Boardman of Brooklyn, Mrs. II. E. Tisdale, Miss Tisdale, and Miss Whittier of New York, Judge Henry Stoddard and Mrs. Stoddard and Miss Hawks of New Haven, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Seltzer of Pottsville, Pa., Miss M. K. Marvel of Philadelphia, Miss Rudolph of Stamford, Mr. J. E. Kellogg of Fitch burg, and Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Pottle of 'Teilerson, N. II. Oovtrnor Letcher's Viewpoint. " There's everything in the force of example," remarked the observant guest. u Take for instance, Governor Letcher when he first visited Sulphur Springs, Virginia. To make an impression on him his physician poured some whisky in the water, which immediately turned as black as ink. " ' You see what it does, don't you ? ' queried the doctor. 4 Yes,' responded the governor, and 1 promise you I'll not touch a drop of that water as long as I stay here.' " Golf, Tennis, Trap and Pistol Events for Balance of Season.
