MAKING NEGRO LIVES COUNT
Scenes from the hopelessness of the
old life, through Hampton's indus
trial training, to the joy of service,
interpreted by plantation melodies
by the Hampton Singers.
PLANTATION SONGS
"There's a meeting here tonight"
"Nobody Tcnows de trouble I've seen"
The Hampton Singers
SCENES FROM THE OLD LIFE
Hamshackle cabins, tumbling out
buildings, ragged children happy
in the sunlight, the sad old mule and
ill-fed steer dragging by the doorway
where the Negro woman washes, tells
the story of hundreds of communities.
PLANTATION SONGS
"EseMel saw de wheel"
' Swing low, sweet chariot ' '
The Hampton Singers
SCENES AT HAMPTON

SCENES FROM THE NEW LIFE
Back to the cabins and the pines;
how Hampton's graduates carry the
message to their own people.
HAMPTON'S MESSAGE
Major Bobert B. Moton
plantation songs The Hampton Singers
If Fresh from their recent New York suc
cess, the students who are singing in
twenty States, are coming. If One hun
dred thousand dollars is the sum to be
raised this year; over three hundred boys
and girls are in need of scholarship.
If f f Will you take stock in a life?" is
the plea. If" Would you know the souls
of black folk? Listen, then, to the old
plantation songs by the Hampton Sing
ers. You dream of Dixie and
the land of cotton when you hear the
slave-day melodies. You see Virginia, the
cabins and the cornfields, passing in mo
tion before you. You see Hampton Insti
tute training leaders, tradesmen, farmers
and teachers. If Back among the Southern
pines again, among their own people, you
watch a miracle of change, where Hamp
ton graduates are leavening the lump.
If Whether the. scenes move you to laugh
ter or tears you will know that there are
faithful black folk at work today whose
service for our country spells 'peace on
earth, good will to men.' "
Cm OATS GET THE GOLF BUG!
Also Golf Ball Belonging- to litin-g-ulalied
Political JFouronie
Even the goats here literal usage,
please have got the golf bug. A "po
litical foursome" including Congressman
Allan T. Treadway of Stockbridge and
Senator Albert B. Cummings of Des
Moines, playing Congressman S. F.
Prouty of Des Moines and E. J. Frost of
Boston, encountered a couple on No 1
course who sauntered out from cover when
the balls landed, sniffed at the "baby
dimple" in disdain and made for tall
timber with a ' ' whippet ! ' ' Congressman
Treadway thinks they thought it was a
quinine pill, but, nevertheless, they got
his "jroat!"
Never Anything- Xylite It
America has never produced anything
like the "Whippet" golf ball in the
opinion of many golfers, but a recent
improvement in the "everlasting" rub
ber paint makes it even better than for
merly, preserving as it does all of the
"grip" the ball has upon the club, and
also doing away with the stickiness which
gathered dust, but which, by-the-way, was
not at all objectionable as it was very
easily removed by washing, f The golfer
should, however, bear in mind that there
are no less than five different balls, and
that one of these is best adapted to his
requirements. In a word, the ball that
suits his partner will not, necessarily, be
the one best adapted to Jus particular
need.
MIm Harnett' Tennl Trophy
Miss Edith Barnett was the winner of
the annual Washington's Birthday tennis
singles trophy with clean-cut 7 5 and

Brooklyn. f In the semi-final Miss Bar
nett won from Miss Eleanor Gates, and
Miss Blum from Mrs. H. H. Van Cleef.
If The list of entries also included:

II. Hanna, C. D. Barrows and B. F.
Stentz; and Misses M. S. Eice, Blanche
and Barbara Farrington, Alice Presbrey
and Theresa Neil.
Holly Inn Turn Table
The Holly Inn team turned the tables
on The Carolinas in the weekly baseball
game with a clean-cut five three win;
Elkins and McAuley, and Morgan and
Fitzgerald the batteries and Walker um
pire. 1J The victors recorded runs in the
first, third and fifth innings, while the
losers scored only in the second and
seventh. If Next Wednesday afternoon
the teams will break the existing tie.
