Spencer Waters Hays One of the most satisfactory facts in connection with the growth of Pinehurst and one calculated to inspire confidence in the minds of all who are interested in the development of the village, is the purchase of property by those who have been spending Winters here for a long period, and who are, therefore, familiar with everything concerning the place j its climate, its social atmophere, the busi ness methods of its promoters, and the outlook for a successful future. Among the latest of the "Old Guard" to join the list of Pinehurst tax payers is Mr. Spencer Waters, who has pur chased a lot at the corner of Beulah Hill and Shaw Roads, just beyond where Mr. James Barber is building, and who already has plans for a most attractive and substantial residence in the hands of his architect. The work of construc tion will begin at the earliest possible moment. Mr. and Mrs. Waters are too well known here too need any introduction. Both are enthusiastic golfers and all round good sports. Mr. Waters is one of the best known authorities on the cot ton market in the United States, a prom inent member of the New York Cotton Exchange, and a member of its Board of Governors. His permanent home is at Rye, N. Y., and he i3 a member of the following clubs: New York Club, Na tional Golf Club, Long Island Country Club, Apawamis, Ardsley, New York Athletic Club and the Pinehurst Tin Whistles. Mr. and Mrs. Waters have this season occupied Mr. Pierce's house, the Maples. A Dellffhtfnl JEvenlnr was spent by many guests at a small dance given by Mrs. Henry S. Houston at Fernleigh last Thursday evening for Miss Vena Houston and Miss Josephine Houston of Holyoke, Mass. Many of the cottage colony and guests at the hotels were there, and several parties from tne outlying plantation. Among those pres ent were Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Ellison, Miss Rosso of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sandfbrd, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Newcomb, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Dan- forth, Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Waring, Miss Bogart, Miss Lucy Priest, Mr. J. L. Weller, Sam Wardwell, and the Dana boys, Howard Philips, Mr. Knapp and Mr. Lightfoot from Southern Pines. a B I E 1 ED If p m II D 1111 1 tn n ALPHaKO Hills Sure Way to Prevent and Hollows in Your Greens a one m P fl a 8 a fl KEENS' Keeper Flynn of the Marion Course savs that mo gicatcjsu uujccuuus iu me use or staDie manures lor making or renovating greens; is its tendency to produce hollows. The decay of the litter and consequent shrinkage causes the turf to sink in spots, often requiring bothersome and costly underfilling to restore levels." The base of Alphano being a thoroughly decomposed rich soil humus in dry finely granulated form ; it can be benely incorporated with the soil, giving a compact, firm, lasting surface. Ton for ton, its humus value and plant food content is about five times greater than average barnyard manure; with the added advantage of being free from weed seeds and odorless. As a top dressing mixed with two-thirds soil, it is highly useful. Do not confuse it with the raw unprepared humus (sold under various brand names) which is being taken direct from its watery bed and shipped to the purchaser. Send for the Alphano Book.
