Playing on number two course Tues
day afternoon the Secretary of State
and Donald Eoss matched their aggregate
score against Robert Sheppard and W. E.
Truesdell, two of the ranking golfers in
Pinehurst. The match caused the great
est public interest, and resulted in some
it was, for the first time the inspiration
failed at this juncture, and a short putt
was missed, and the total of 31 included
another five on this hole.

The Secretary and Ross finished a bare
one up. The most spectacular part of
the match was Donald Ross' play coming
in. No better golf has ever been seen in
these parts, if indeed, anywhere in the
world. Up to the very last shot it was
phenominal- He made the nine hiles in
thirty one. And this is not the whole
story either. This includeed a five on the
eleventh. And on the 402 yard eighteenth
the thisd shot lacked only the fraction
of an inch of being holed for a 29. As
