SlttHAJL SUCCESS JfKlas Carver' Itecltal at the Carolina Miss Priscilla Carver, the noted pianist, gave a recital in the ball room of the Carolina Hotel on Tuesday last before a large and enthusiastic audience of guests, the cottage colony and the lovers of good music throughout the district. The performance was for the benefit of the Red Cross and realized a good sum of money to the credit of the patronesses and Pinehurst. Judge Steele introduced Miss Carver and made a forceful appeal for the cause of relief work so much in need these days, and gave the occasion a dignified and auspicious beginning. Miss Carver's playing was a rare com bination of brilliant technique and a sing ing quality of tone which enabled her to express deep feeling and hold the close attention of her audience. Her program was especially interesting and well bal anced as the selections included both the duo-classicists and the ultra modern. Miss Carver's renditions were all so good it is difficult to select any for special praise, but her hearers were most charmed with the two Debussy numbers and the brilliance of style of the Rachmaninoff Prelude as well as the Concert Etude of MacDowell. Miss Carver showed her ap preciation of the enthusiasm of her audi ence and closed a delightful evening with an encore of an Irish Folk Song. Annie Oakley who has been giving lessons in shooting to the ladies of Pinehurst this season with such signal success, on Thursday last registered her 700th pupil in the art of handling firearms. This is over three companies of infantry, and is an activity that might well take the serious atten tion of the National Defense Association.
