jJpAGE THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK 7 1
SILVEH FOILS III Ell SCOIIK
Sir. Ilnrd Makes Bet Score for
the Sea oh
Mrs. J. V. Hurd of Pittsburgh, who
as Miss Dorothy Campbell, held all the
championships in sight, has been awarded
the Silver Foils trophy for the best
il ringer ' score made during the present
season. The Number One Course was
selected as the test round and scores made
in regular 18 hole match play were alone
eligible for the record.
Here is Mrs. Hurd's ringer card, show
ing her best ball score on each hole of
the course. It should be noted that some
of Mr3. Hurd's best playing has been
done in tournaments and matches played
on the other courses at Pinehurst and
that credit for low figures achieved on
such other courses is of course not
reprsented in the following card:
ball tied or excelled the best ball score
of each of her 17 competitors. In other
words, her card represents in itself the
best ball score of all 18 players!
twelve holes were made by Mrs. Hurd
in par; five under par; and there was
only one, the loth, for which one over par
was required.
Of the five holes negotiated under par,
Mrs. Hurd was the only player to make
the 6th in two, or the 14th in three, or
the 16th in 3. Mrs. Palmer joined Mrs.
Hurd in making the 3rd in four, and Miss
Helen Andrews of Akron shared the 11th
with Mrs. Hurd in 2. The 505 yard 17th
was made in five by three of the 18
players Miss Elinor Gates of the Nassau
Country Club, Mrs. Palmer and Mrs.
Hurd. No (layer, man or woman, ama
teur or professional, has been able to
improve on Mrs. Hurd's two for the 6th
and 11th. The only hole made in one at
Pinehurst this season is the 9th on the

The record on the Number One Course
is 68 and is held by Alec Boss, the well
known professional, who won the North
and South Open Championship last year.
Phil Carter has done it in 70, and in
practice play in 69.
Mrs. Hurd has been playing at Pine
hurst through the greater part of the
season and comparisons of her record
with those made by other well known
women players would be unprofitable, as
some players who might have 'worked
down their score to something like Mrs.
Hurd's figures by playing throughout a
number of weeks, did not enter the com
petition; others started too late to arrive
at low scores, and others abandoned the
contest when it was seen that there was
no earthly chance of overtaking Mrs.
Hurd's figures. It may however be men
tioned that of the 17 other players whose
best ball figures were placed on record in
this competition, none came nearer than
14 strokes to Mrs. Hurd's 65. The fol
lowing tied at 79 for second place: Mrs.
Guy Metcalf, of the Agawam Hunt,
Providence; Mrs. Spencer Waters, New
York, Apawamis; and Mrs. Theron R.
Palmer, Erie Golf Club. Miss Priscilla
Beall, Uniontown C. C, sister of Ned
Beall, winner of the April Tournament,
was third in 80. The first three named
are first divsion players, and Miss Beall
also arrived at first division honors in
the recent North and South.
The most remarkable feature in Mrs.
Hurd's card is the fact that at each
and every one of the 18 holes her best

Philip Carter and by James Wilson, the
professional.
Mrs. Hurd's threes on the 14th and
16th, unique so far as this contest is
concerned, represent still more remark
aide playing than the more spectacular
twos on the short holes. The cup is
about 1100 feet distant from the tee in
oach case, and to arrive on the green in
two is a feat which few women players
can hope to equal.
