crsault, threw Hurd wide, rolling

rider, who recaptured his mount
and dashed on off after the
vanishing squadron, Tufts'; ntiy
bald faced hunter, Lady Francis'.
jumped square into the fourh

pinning on the ground. This
left the'- George, with Whit lock

Wanamaker Wins Again
The pick of. four stables started
in the mile flat race for-tho-j
roughbreds. Hurd entered Ked-
ron ridden by Whitlock, Smith'
rode Captain Heck for "the Pine
hurst Stables, Captain Welch sent
in Kendeleu with Thomas up, and
Rodman Wanamaker wore the
Meadowbrook colors on Grath.
It was breakneck the whole way,
with Grath in the lead and Ked-
ron second, Kendeleu third and
Captain Heck fourth. They held
this position as they flashed by
the stand for the first time, and
turned-the last-corner as if they
had been placed to stay. But
here Thomas came to an under
standing with his animal and
started something. He passed
Kedron like a thunderbolt and
fairly flew after the Meadow-
brook mount. It was a fine, spec
tacular rally, but lacked the final
punch, Wanamaker passing under
the wire two lengths to the good,
in 1.351.
Mattie the Great ,her broad
light mane standing in breeze like
Hector's plume came out this
afternoon to challenge the too
proud victories of the Walter C.
Thomas had the Farm Boy and
the determined little Toy in the
game. But the whole combina
tion were not enough to do the
trick. Penny's horse took the first
heat and the last. - Mattie the
Great landed the second in her
old form and in the third from'
last position made the beginnings
of a fine spurt at the fourth quar-.
ter which brought the stand to
its feet and Penny's heart to his
mouth. But she broke in the
stretch arid left it to the game
little' Toy to fight a losing 'fighi
for first place. The Farm Boy
ran second in the first race but
hardly figured in the others, due
to a very bad start in each case.
Remus Snowball broke the
record in the tree chopping' con
test. Reminiscent of the old lum
bering days he fell upon tlie
twenty-four inch stump and felled
it. clean in four minutes and six
seconds.

(Professor Henry van Dyke of Prince

the post: of United States Minister to
Holland, an.d is .here on his , way home,
contributes the following poem to The
New YorTc Times:)
You dare to say with perjured lips:
"We fight to make the ocean free,,-t-
You whose black trail of butchered ships
Bestrews the bed of every sea
Where German submarines have wrought
Their hororsl Have you never thought
What you call freedom men call piracy?
Unnumbered ghosts that haunt the wave
Where you have murdered cry you
down,
And seamen whom you would not save
Weave now in weed-grown depths a
crown .
Of shame for your imperious head,
A dark memorial of the dead,
Women and children whom you left
to drown.
j .Nay, not till thieves are set to guard
The gold, and 'corsairs called to keep
Q 'er peaceful commerce watch and ward,
And wolves to herd the helpless sheep,
Shall men and women look, to thee,
Thou ruthless Old Man of the Sea,
To safeguard law and freedom on the
deep!
