In Retrospect To the casual observer of men and events in this chosen spot of America, the things ignored by the gathering congregations in the Sandhills are quite as aston ishing and bewildering as are the opportunities embraced. Sitting on a stump beside the old Mor ganton road a few years ago no prophet would have been bold enough to predict that the time would come when an army of wealthy and cultivated gentlemen from all parts of the continent would pass in endless array down the landscape in pure play; that old Linden would be within sight of a residence district rivalling Cedarhurst or the Chestnut Hill in the nature of its inhabitants and architecture. He would have chortled at the idea that any man would ever find the neighborhood so crowded that he couldn't get a bed for a king's ransom. And yet all these things are common places of the day. and the bane of the Front Clerk; -.-.-. . A Naturalist's Enthusiasm But on the other hand he would have observed the unusual pro fusion and variety of the wild flowers growing under his feet the innumerable migrant birds invading the forest, birds of song and of fancy feather, game birds to delight the fowler's eye, and little warblers under cover, the ornithologist's reward. He would have taken stock of the glens and springs and streams, of cypress swamp and their busy inhabi tants, coons and otters and deer and fox, prowling hawks and great horned owls. And he would have said that within a decade the lovers of na ture, men who take delight in camp fires under wonderful heav ens painters who draw their in spiration from the prism of the sunset the endless roll call of students who catalogue the deni zens of forest and stream, and the followers of the twenty gauge gun would all flock here by the thousand. An Astonishing Oversight And behold, we hear nothing about it. Every midget wearing feathers within a hundred miles of Boston is spied upon by a dozen field glasses. Every brook in the Catskills has wet the pages of some volume of "Chapman on the Birds of North America." The ashes of ten thousand camp fires testify to the primitive heart of men seeking the company of waste places, and the banks of every river in Maine has launched its thousands of canoes. An Invitation And yet we print today for the first time the observations of a gentleman upon the birds of Pine hurst. And were actually aston ished to hear that the otters were as common as frogs in the waters of the Lumbee. What is the truth about it? Aren't we interested in the magic of the wild country down the an cient stream, or has the Outlook failed to make its invitation for some confidence in the matter? We would like to have some record of all the birds of all the flowers of all the plants. We would like to hear what it is you have seen, or photographed or killed. Send it along. We won't only print it, we will be profound ly grateful. Pinehurst School A Day and Boarding School for r,0y3 two miles from Pinehurst, on an eminence overlooking the Long Leaf Pine Plai eau.
