Permanent Committee Mrs. T. T. Watson, Mrs. H. W. Priest, Mrs. C. E. Horton and Mrs. G. M. Howard. Holdlem or Sugar? Slipped in amongst the great mass of daily report of horrors, speculations and revolutions and insanities which consti tute the news there was a single para graph on Christmas day that has a vital if unpleasant interest to every person in the village and particularly to every guest in the hotels. It occurred in Hoover s reply to the Sugar Ring, given out at the White House after Senator Reed of doubtful reputation had refused to hear it before the Congressional Investigation Committee. This was a flat statement to the effect that the American people had just two alternatives. One was to get along with a curtailed allowance of sugar; the other take ships desperately needed to supply our troops in France, and go to Java after the makings for the deserts and sugar plums of a greedy and pampered race, ne saia tnai it; wouiu require snap ping sufficient to maintain 200,000 men on the firing line to make up our sugar shortage. Now of course no living thing that can be called a man would entertain this proposition for a minute.. Of course those ships are not going after sugar. But if not, it is up to you. If the country is short of sugar, and is going to stay short, for the very best reason in the world, this means that either every one of us will have to cut down, or that while we indulge some other poor sucker will be compelled to do without entirely. There is the makings of a first class riot in this the spring board from which Bosheviki and anarchist and I. W. W. can jump a long way. If the rich and those in comfortable circumstances dip into the sugar bowl just the same, as fancy or inclination dictates, while East Side women and Pittsburg Pollacks are driven to take their coffee straight and put molasses on their porridge, the Ger man Propagandist will have a rich field to work in, and his misguided dupes a basis of real injustice in their com plaints. If this comes home to us at all, it re quires what Roosevelt calls definite im mediate action.. It literally means that when you have finished the Oysters and the Green Turtle Soup, and the Roast and the Entree and the Salad and the Nuts and the Punch and all the rest of it, that you deliberately refuse to or der pies and puddings and that great array of sweet nonsense that no hotel man on earth dares leave from his bill of fare for fear you will tear off in a fury. This is serious business. There is no use talking about having the will to stay with this game until the Teuton is licked unless we can take with a grin a great deal worse privation that the lack of Bread Pudding after a collation. TOE XKW YE A II WMCOJIBI Colony Oaltaem at Carolina to IVance Out 1017J Ring out the old, ring in the new Ring out the false, ring in the true. Hail 1918, Harbinger of better days to come the eclipse of the Teuton Hor ror and the coming of an Anglo Saxon Peace. And more sugar in the tea and songs by the fire, the return of the boys and the twanging of the lyre. All of this and more too charged the air with hope, and the chorus of Auld Lange Syne stirred old memories while the New Years party in motley gear stood at attention in the ball room of the Carolina New Years Eve. It was a big night on the coast. Glorious to behold the belles ot the Colony arrived in close order to invade the bright lights of the dining room, to set the pace and lend the cheer to the parties scheduled for to celebrate. Then on with the red lined opera cloaks and off in the steaming cabriolets in solid phalanx the revellers and who this night was not a reveller? off I say the revellers rolled to take in the marvelous adventures of Tom Sawyer and the inimitable Huckleberry Finn, pflayed that evening at the Carolina Theatre by the talented Mr. Pickford. At ten o'clock the bass viol and the Bag of Tricks went into violent- action, and the whole town repaired to the dancing floor. As the witching hour ap proached the great punch bowl made its majestic entry flanked by generous trays filled with the products of the pastry pantry ; the Master of Ceremo nies called for the assembled company to fall into column of twos, and encircle the hall holding solemn and silent con clave until. the twelve strokes announced the surcease of the passing year. When the last echo of the requiem had died away, the din broke forth. Arriving from no one knows where there appeared caps and hats and head gear of all colors and shapes and styles and periods, donned to the infernal racket of rattles and horns and tootems and screetchems. And so on into the night. Plantation 1a Mrs. Harry G. Waring has started her series of Thursday afternoon teas and Bridge parties, embracing the colony. Mrs. Spencer Waters, Mrs. J. D. Arm strong, Mrs O. C. Hoyt, Mrs. Jay Hall and Mrs. E. C. Horton were the guests last week.
