THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK
Be Hall of All tht Player. Ever
Over Championship Course
pinehurst, N. C, December 22. The
Number Two course at Pinehurst, com
monly known as the Championship
Course, has been made in 38, but it has
taken a decade and a large number
of players to do it. A search through
the records of the Pinehurst Country
Club and the pages of the Pinehurst Out
look has revealed the fact that the best
ball of all amateur golfers whose notable
achievements on the Championship Course
have been recorded . during the past ten
years, yields an 'out' of 17 and an 'in'
of 21, or a total of 38 strokes for the
18 holes. Par is 36-35, 71.
The best recorded round on the course
is Philip Carter's famous 66, made on
January 31, 1916. That included how
ever a couple of approximations and a
conceded putt; and Carter himself, rising
from his comfortable seat at the steering
wheel of his ambulance . on the French
front, would be the first to protest
against the allowance of his great feat
as the official record of the course.
James Brady, the well-known profes
sional, played the course in 35-32, 67,
when winning the North and South Open
Championship last March. The official
amateur record is held by Parker W.
Whittemore, of the Country Club, who
played the course in 68 on two occa
sions last winter.

No. 18, 402 yards, par 4, many, 3.
Total, in 3110 yards, par 35, played in
21.
From the above card it 'will be seen
that Walter J. Travis is the only player
who has twice made a Hole in One on the
Championship Course. The long par 5
holes, with the exception of the 7th, have
each been made in 2, and it is an open
question whether a short hole in one or
a par hole in two, is the greater exploit.
Jack Sullivan, Jr., of Boston, J. D. Arm
strong and C. M. Ransom, of Buffalo,
and W. E. Truesdell, winner of the last
Seniors Tournament, have each humbled
a proud par 5 to a mere 2.

The U. S. soldiers in training "down
South" this winter are going to have
lots of opportunity to play golf. Lead
ing golfers throughout -the country are
getting together drivers and irons and
putters and sending them to the camps,
many of which are near golf courses. A
U. S. correspondent writes: "In the
event of a camp being miles away from a
course and unhandy to reach, the soldiers
are laying out make-shift circuits of their
own. In France the men have been doing
this for some time and they derive a lot
of relaxation on the battle scarred areas
in trying to get theb all into a hole in
the ground. It's only a suggestion of
the real game, but even that is better
than nothing. ' 'Canadian Golfer.
We agree. But why these makeshift
circuits of their own. Didn't the Lord
place four man-sized links at Pinehurst
right here in this Columbia, Charlotte,
Spartenburg circle for the express bene
fit of these training heroes?
