CHE PINEBVBST OUTLOOK PAGE 8 Melos Outstrips Field Leads Thoroughbreds Home at the Jockey Club Black and Red Shows the Way in the Hurdles Taking the lead near the last hurdle the Black and White ensign of the Nibbs stables worn by Jockey Wright, came forth victorious in one of the most gruelling steeplechases ever witnessed on the Pinehurst turf. The famous geld ing was pitted against the best to be found in this circuit the redoubtable Little Horn, ridden by Archibald, Al gardi, who can lay claim to the cham pionship of the track, with Taylor up, and the renowned His Nibbs, ridden by Wright. In view of his recent success, Algardi was greatly handicapped in weight, Taylor tipping the scales at 148, against G. Wright 135, Wright 130 and Archibald 134. Taylor sent Algardi to the froat at the 'start and for the first quarter of a mile had hard work disposing of Little Horn. Melos had been away slowly in the mean time and was among the last to round the first turn, but once in the back stretch he began to show his form 'and rapidly over hauled the leader. The rest of the race was a thrilling spectacle. Jockey Wright, holding the hard pulling Melos back for the last spurt gave the big chestnut his head with one-quarter to go and he leap ed forward. Algardi held on gamely, but the long course and heavy weight pre vented him from keeping up with the challenger and Melos cleared the tape a winner a good margin. Archibald rode a pretty race, but the best he could do was third place, beating out His Nibbs by several lengths. It was Advertiser's Day at the Jockey Club and some great events had been framed up for their benefit. It was one of the j oiliest crowds that had assembled at the Track this season and also one of the largest. They were happy, when Miss Frances Thomas won the Ladies' Trot ting race under saddle and more so when "Tub" beat "Butter" in the Novelty Flat race, but the Eeichstag riots were in comparable to the uproar when Molly 0. crossed the line a winner by a hair from Uncle Sam in the seven furlong flat event. Four horses went to post in this race, among them being Rosewater, Wm. Stock's sorrel mare, ridden by Atwell, George Roach, with Carter up. Wright started the race in his usual fashion by clinching the rail position, with Lasses, up on Uncle Sam, right at his heels. Both riders kept their horses under slight restraint for the first three quarters when Lasses decided to ride. The head of the home stretch found both horses going the limit, with Molly 0. a little to the good. Ten yards from the finish it looked like a dead heat, but Wright managed to draw another spurt from the mare and she crossed the line a winner. It was a great day for Jockey Wright on the track, for the riding of this young chap stood out as the most brilliant part of the program. On Mildred Euretta Wright had things his own way, for he rushed to the front at the start and stay ed there all the way round. There was an exciting battle for second place, Call up on Joe Miller capturing the place by a nose from Lydonia ridden by Lasses. And now comes Joe Hamilton, the Wickart's brown beauty and a perfect running machine, seeking new laurels and large purses. Pitted against Hyde's Prince Pepper, Mittie Bedworth, owned ,'by V. Eden, and H. Eden's Gentry Dic tator, in the Class A. trot or paee, he pro ceeded to win the event in straight heats. He certainly set out about it in the right way. Making a scramble for the pole in the first heat he passed the leaders at the half mile mark and edged over the finishing line a good winner. The second heat was not without its thrills. Nothing daunted, the bunch took up the chase when Joe leaped out in front, but the steady-working brown gelding was not to be denied and he again flashed over the line a victor. The formidable brown again took the pole in the third and final heat and set out with a rush and roar and tore into the finish as he began.
