WESTERN CARTRIDGE CO., EAST ALTON, ILL. The Field Trials began ton Monday last, having been postponed from Janu ary 26th. The Pinehurst Field Trials were inaugurated two years ago by a group of local dog fanciers, who pro posed merely to invite their friends and a few well-known handlers to come to Pinehurst with their dogs, and in a small way enjoy a few days in the field. They knew that the character of the surrounding- country imposed limi tations on running dogs in the open, and therefore refrained from press agenting their trials up and down the land. They were content to jog along slowly for a few years until such time as they could blossom out under the most favorable conditions. In spite of their modesty in the mat ter, and perhaps because of it, their field trials have apparently come into full bloom. Fifty dogs have been enter ed to run in the trials, and if the num ber of entries count, for anything this ;tecord-brea?4ng field places Pinehurst well to the fore. However, the quality of the dogs is as remarkable as the num ber of them. On Monday, the first day of the Mem bership Stake, Mr. P. H. Powell, of Providence, R. I., entered his Duke of Strideaway, Lem Danstone, Banrock Tippo B, Denwood Leta Ferris and Preachers Mac. Mr. Harry Kirkover, the well-known Buffalo handler, entered his Ashanti Dominant, Manside Beau and Ruby's Sport. Mr. C. C. Allen, whose dogs are handled by Mr. Coffee, of Statesville, N. C, brought along Max Cummins, Gus Wheeler, Merry Xmas and Hero. Mr. Frank Butler entered Pinehurst Lad and Annie Oakley contributed her promising Anrie Oakley's Fred. Mr. E. A. Wutson, of New York City, staked his chance mi Foils Dixie Queen and Lottie B. Pinehurst dogs were Van Hall's John, entered and handled, for the first time, by Mrs. L. F. F. "Wanner, and Rex, owned by Mr. H. G. Waring, of Mag nolia Farm. Out of the eighteen dogs entered above, twelve were eliminated on the first series and six were elected to run in the second series, to have been run on Tuesday, but postponed on account of rain. Th ese nine braces were run on the grounds out along the Carthage Road and also at John Allen MacDonald's Farm, near the "Van Lindley Orchard. During the afternoon Annie Oakley's Fred contributed a little excitement by scaring up a big gray fox and giving him a good chase for a little while be fore returning to the business in hand. There was a great temptation to turn the field trials into a fox hunt. Lunch was served to the riders in the pack house at the orchard. In the after noon the sun came out and the cold wind died down, which made things more comfortable for both the dogs and their followers. Judges in the Membership Stake were Mr. Leon Seay, of Charlotte, N. C, Dr. J. S. Brown and Mr. Leonard Tufts of Pinehurst. The Field Trials are being conducted under the direction of the veteran John White, Secretary and Treasurer of the Continental Club of Hempstead, L. I. who has been in the dog handling busi ness for years and is an acknowledged authority on all that pertains to it. Hotel Arrivals AT "THE BERKSHIRE Baker, Mr. W. D., Pittsburgh, Pa.
