The Amateur Target Tournament
The Annual Mid-April Shoot in
Pinehurst is always an important event
on the Southern trapshooter 's program.
It is decidedly a Southerner's shoot and
this year, as in past years, attracted the
best guns on the Southern Atlantic sea
board. The entries were large last week
and the sound of gun fire coming from
the direction of the Gun Club was con
tinuous all the week. Weather con
ditions on all days, except Friday, when
a gale of wind swept the traps, were
ideal for the shooters.
On the opening day many of the old,
familiar hands were on deck. There
John Philip Sousa
were Mr. Todd and Mr. Squier, of
course, and also the old reliable Sousa,
bandmaster to the United States, crack
shot and annual upholder of the honor
of Northern guns. He has been coming
to Pinehurst for many years, attending
both the Mid-Winter Handicap and the
Mid-April shoot. The only Pinehurst
amateur on hand was John C. Spring
Other Pinehurst shooters usually counted
on are Mr. C. T. Crocker, Jay Hall, B.
V. Covert, Parker Whittemore and G.
A. Magoon.
The ranks of the professionals were
led by the famous Homer Clark, of Al
ton, 111. Last year with an average of
9755, Clark ranked fifth among the lead
ing trapshooters of the country. Owing
to illness he was unable to compete in all
the events. Other well-known marks
men, professionals and amateurs, at the
firing line were J. F. Chipley, of Green
wood, S. C.; J. Des Portes; W. T.
Laslie, of Charlotte; H. A. Morson, the
North Carolina Champion; John M.
Morehead and J. L. Morehead of Char
lotte; W. M. Webb; C. 0. Le Compte;
P. R. Earle; Robert Shelor and W. L.
Hefner.
The North and South Tournament was
run on Monday and Tuesday, 175 tar
gets the first day and 175 the second
day.. Albert A. Kroehle of Cleveland
Heights, Ohio, who is a new star in the
trapshooting firmament, was high gun
on the first day with a break of 169 out
of 175. His nearest rival was George
Williams, of Miami, Florida, who scored
166. On Tuesday Kroehle and Williams
both dropped four birds out of seventy
five; the result was that Kroehle led his
rival and the field by two birds, break
ing 239 out of a possible 250. The

In accordance with precendent the
leading Southern guns were placed
against the five leading Northern guns
and the total of the scores indicated
that the Southerners had outshot the
Northerners by a total of 42 birds. A.
E. Kroehle was the mainstay of the
Northern team, but even though the
winner of the shoot was on the Northern
side he could not pull his team-mates
along with him. The scores show that
only one Southern gun was below 230,
while there was only one Northern gun
above 230.

The North and South Handicap, run
on Tuesday afternoon, was a contest of
five events, 20 targets each, and when
the smoke had cleared off the field there
was discovered a four-cornered tie be
tween the redoubtable Khoehle, from the
21 yard line, U. R. Brooks, of Columbia,
S. C, from the 19 yard line, Rowland
Pittman, of Whitakers, N. C, and Robt.
Shelor, of Sumter, S. C, the last two
shooting from the 18 yard line. Each
man broke 92 out of 100. On the shoot
off of 20 targets, Pittman won the
Handicap Title with a break of 19 out
of the 20. He slipped up on his very
last bird.
The events of greatest interest at the
shoot were the North Carolina State
Championships. The winner of the 300
sixteen yard contest who is resident in
this state is annually declared the State
Champion and receives a trophy donated
by the A. T. A. In addition this year
the winner or runner-up will have his
railroad and Pullman fare, to and from
the Grand American Handicap, paid by
the A. T. A., conditional upon his at
tending G. A. H. and competing in the
National Amateur Championship at
single targets.
The North Carolina State Shoot
proved to be a neck and neck run be
tween A. H. Morson, of Charlotte, who
was defending his title, and J. B. Penn
ington, of Tarboro, the aspirant. At
the end of the first day, after 200 tar
gets had been thrown, Morson was four
birds ahead of Pennington; but on Fri
day Morson fell off slightly and Penn
ington made up the four points. Out of
300 targets they stood each with 280 to
their credit. In the shoot-off which fol
lowed the two experts locked horns
again and each smashed 18 x 20. The
champion was fighting for his life and
the gallery, sensing something interest
ing, grew in size and intently watched
the duel. On the second 20 targets Mor
son asserted his superiority, accounting
for 17, whereas the best Pennington
could do was to shatter 16. He made a
strong bid for the title. The scores
