Fielder of New Jersey, and Mrs. Fielder are at the Carolina. Prominent among recent guests at the Carolina was Governor Thomas W. Bick- ett of North Carolina, who spent several days there during the week past. Miss Janet Johnson entertained a num ber of her young friends at tea and dancing at the Country Club on Thurs day afternoon last. Mr. Carl Fayen entertained a party of twenty-one of the younger set at tea and dancing at the Country Club on Saturday afternoon. Mr. R. M. Purves, Secretary of the Winter Golf League of Advertising In terests, has arrived at Pinehurst to ar range for the annual frolic of that body, which will open at the Country Club on January 8 and continue throughout the week. Supreme Court Justice Edward Ridley Finch and Mr. Elihu Root, Jr., Avon three matches out of five from Justice John M. Tierney and Mr. Thomas W. Church ill in the Republican-Democratic tourney held last week. As the victors are Re publicans the three wins were credited to the G. O. P. Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. F. Wanner gave a dinner-dance at the Club on New Year's Eve. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Dickinson Bishop, Mr. and Mrs. Ed win Wanner, Mr. and Mrs. Jay V. Hall, Mrs. Mary Barnum, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. N. S. Hurd, Mr. and Mrs. F. N. B. Close, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Page, Messrs. E. C. Beall, Ralph W Page and J. W. Souther. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. R. S. Chase, whose wedding took place in Holyoke, Mass. on December 27, are spending their honey moon at Fernleigh, the winter home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Houston, at Pinehurst. The bride was Miss Vera Houston and is a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Collins, Miss Sally Peters, Miss Betty Thompson and Messrs. Walter Blackington, FTancis Harrison and Edwin Beckwith were members of a riding party that rode out some ten miles on Wednesday last to the beautiful pine grove known as the Isle of a Thousand Pines. Miss Sarah Wiley was hostess to a party of young folks from Pinehurst and Southern Pines at a dinner given at the Highland Pines Inn last Saturday eve ning. Miss Dorothy Dunlap, Miss Mary Jordon, Messrs. Albert Tufts, Charles P. Mason, Irving Johnson, J. V. Healey were guests from Pinehurst. Mrs. Wiley, Miss Ruth Goldsmith, Miss Marjorie Watson, Miss Edith Edwards, Mr. Robert Goldsmith from, Southern Pines, ajid Miss Ellen Meurice and Mr. Stewart Meurice from Eagle Springs. On Tuesday last a large party rode out to the quaint old-fashioned mill at the McKenzie Place. The mill is an old building with historical associations and with an ancient grindstone, supposed to date back 200 years. The riders included Mrs. Frederick J. Thieme and Miss Martha Thieme, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Collins, Mrs. Evelyn P. Spencer, the M'sses Isabel Beckwith, Sue and Fran ces Carns, Edith Frost, Sally Peters, Elizabeth Thompson, Dorothy Daggett and Jeanette Bissell, and Messrs A. W. Jarvis and Edwin Beckwith. A field of about twenty riders started out after the hounds on the early morn ing of Thursday last. The dogs gave voice within twenty minutes of the start and after a hard run of several hours Brer' Fox was overhauled' and took refuge in the upper branches of a tree, whence he was brought down by Lieut. W. H. Clark. Those who were in the party were Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hunner man, the Misses Martha and Lida Leon ard, Margaret Thieme, Sally Peters, Katherine Cams, Mrs. Evelyn P. Spen cer, Lieutenant W. II. Clark, Messrs. Edwin Beckwith, Lester Collins, Phillip Johnson, Russell Tracy, Jr., Francis Harrison,- and Justice Edward Ridley Finch. The Carolina ball room was the scene of a merry time last Wednesday evening when the Juniors held forth and declared the evening as their own, and from hotels and cottages, town and plantation, the casual observer found a grand as sembly awaiting the word from Wiley Pope Swift that the dance was on. A myriad of balloons, miniature banjos, paper hats and fans of all shapes and descriptions, and rosettes of many hues were distributed by Mr. and Mrs. Fred erick Clare Bouiead, under whose super A'ision the affair was most successfully arranged and conducted. A new form of Lucky Number contest met with great approval, chief laurels and the handsome prizes contributed by Mr. and Mrs. F. G. H. Fayen being awarded to Miss Eliza beth Marr and Mr. Boustead. Air flights at Pinehurst are growing more and more popular each week as is indicated by the large list of passengers carried by Lieutenant Clark during the week past. Among those who enjoyed the thrills of this fascinating pastime were Mrs. S. C. Borg, Miss Dorothy Borg, Mrs. A. L. Carns, the Misses Kate, Susie and Nancy Carns, Mr. and Mrs. II. S. Parker Mrs. Evelyn P. Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. N. S. Crocker, Mrs. R. E. Sproule, Mrs. Charles W. Picquet, Mr. J. C. Thomas, Mr. Silver, Mr. II. B. Swoope, Jr., Miss Edith Frost, Mr. C. T. Richards, Sr., and Mr. C. T. Rich ards, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Tufts entertain ed a large number, of the younger set at a dinner party at the Country Club on New Year's Eve in honor of the young people who are visiting Pinehurst for the holidays. After dinner the party attended the Theatre and later adjourned to the Carolina where danc ing was enjoyed until a late hour.
