JANUARY, 1921 PAGE 9 LOCAL TALENT TO STAGE MINSTREL SHOW GOLF NOTES Guests at Pinehurst and Southern Pines will Je treated later in the season to a grand minstrel show, which will be staged by local talent in the two resorts for the benefit of the Hoover Fund for the children of Europe and for the Southern Pines School. Many golfers who are prominent in .the activities of the two resorts have volunteered their services, and rehearsals have begun. It is certain that those who attend the show will be surprised at the fine quality of voices of these local singers. They raise the roof when ever they gather. William Theirs of Southern Pines, has been elected treasurer of the company. He will also act in the capacity of prop erty man. Professor Piatt of Southern Pines, is leader; Jock Bowker of Pine hurst, has charge of costumes and Rob ert E. Harlow is publicity representative. Others will have work pressed upon them when necessary and will receive due mention. The promoters plan to give the guests a real Old-time minstrel. Black faces, white gloves, bones, local jokes, and many such hair-raising songs as, "I've been working on the railroad, etc." As an added attraction there will be six or seven amazing vaudeville acts, which Keith could not hire at any price. The rehearsals are being conducted in Southern Pines at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Theirs. Among the mem bers of the chorus are P. S. MacLaugh lin, Jock Bowker, Charley Mason, Cap tain Clarke, Tom Kelley, Ralph Page, Jerry Healey, John Tuckerman, A. E. Yeomans, James Boyd, Max Gray, Gus Swoope, Carl Vrooman, and R. E. Har low. The opening night will be Friday, Feb ruary 25th, at the Princess Theatre in Southern Pines. The Pinehurst date will be announced later. Miss Louise Johnston and S. David son Herron of Pittsburgh, former Na tional Amateur champion, were married this week. The Herrons are well known in Pinehurst, as they have been frequent visitors here. ... . . There is posted in ; the Pinehurst clubhouse a notice of the proposed in vasion by American professional golfers next June of Scotland for the. British open championship to be held at St. Andrews. The notice contains space where . golfers may register their names as donors to the movement, by the pay ment of one dollar. No larger amount of money will be received from one per son. A number of golfers have already signed up. S P. Jermain of the Inverness Golf Club of Toledo, the man who did so much to make the 1920 open championship of the United States the well conducted affair it proved to. ber is. working hard to arrange for an international team match for the Walter L. Ross trophy, to be played in Toledo this summer. Mr. Jermain says that the Professional Gnlf firs' association favors the plan. As George Duncan and Abe Mitchell are to be in the United States next summer Mr .Termain hemes that the Roval and Ancient Club of St Andrews will sane tion such a contest. DEAN OF GOLFERS NOW AT PINEHURST Pinehurst golfers are interested in the news that George Duncan and Abe Mitchell will play exhibition matches here next year. Duncan won the British open championship at Deal in June, last, by playing the most remarkable golf shot in competition in the 1920 season, finish ing with rounds of 71 and 72 on the final day of play and bringing himself in a winner after taking two 80 's on the first day, and apparently being out of the running for the title, or even for a place in the money. Mitchell ied the field at the end of the first day's play, but broke badly on his third round. These two golfer's will attract laTge galleries in America and undoubtedly do as well here as Vardon and Ray. Mr. Dwight N. Clark of Woodbridge, Conn., dean of the golfing fraternity, is putting in his twentieth season at Pine hurst. Mr. Clark took up golf at the age of seventy-two, and is now in his ninety-second year. The veteran golfer has not played any so far this season, having undergone a serious operation during the past sum mer, but takes his daily walks to the Country Club and does a little putting and says he will be able to do nine holes very soon. It was only a few years ago that he beat all records for steady play at Pinehurst by disposing of 100 rounds of 18 holes each in 101 consecutive week days. Mr. Clark's best round in recent years was a 47 for the first nine holes on Number 1 course, made four years ago. His best recorded 18-hole round was an 89, made when he was 78 years old. Mr. Clark's birthday, which falls on March 2, is annually the occasion of a happy celebration. EMMET FRENCH MAKES CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE IN 80 WITH A PUTTER One of the most remarkable rounds of golf ever played on the Pinehurst links was that of Emmet French, the Youngs- town professional, on Tuesday last when he made the Championship course in 40-40 80. armed only with a putter His drives, when distance was needed, invariablv ran considerably over the 200 yard mark, and he drove the green for a brilliant 2 at the 212 yard htteentn noie, where most Tlavers use a wooden club. French's work of getting out of the traps with a putter was, perhaps, even more remarkable than his long game. The sixteenth hole, where he got into difficulties and took a 7, was his only Door hole in the round. borne good sized bets were laid that French could not break 90 on the round.
