WOMEN'S ST. VALENTINE'S
TOURNAMENT
Won by Mrs. J. V. Hurd
Mrs. J. V. Hurd, medalist, kept up the
splendid form that marked her play in
the qualifying round, and worked her
way through to the finals of the Six
teenth Annual St. Valentine's Tourna
ment for Women, where she met and
defeated Mrs. Joseph Bydolek by the
comfortable margin of 6 and 5.
Mrs. Hurd went out in 41 against
Mrs. John D. Chapman in the semi
final round and won the match 5 up and
4 to play, finishing with a total of 64
strokes for the fourteen holes where
the match ended. Mrs. Chapman saved
her best golf until it wras too late to
be of much use. She took the eleventh
with a remarkably fine 2 and won the
thirteenth with an equally good 3, but
lost the fourteenth and the match when
Mrs. Hurd took that hole in 4. Mrs.
Bydolek who qualified in second place,
defeated Mrs. George M. Howard in the
semi-final round and advanced to meet
Mrs. Hurd in the final. While Mrs.
Bydolek played an exceptionally good
game, she was not equal to the task of
defeating the title holder and lost to
Mrs. Hurd by 6 and 5.
Pinehurst is fortunate in having as a
member of the cottage colony such a fine
golfer as Mrs. Hurd. She has won more
important competitions throughout the
United States than any other woman
golfer and is the only one who has won
the British, Canadian and United States
titles. She appears to be at the best of
her form now, and if she starts in the
National event this year she is certain
to give the present title holder, Miss
Alexa Sterling, a close race for the cham
pionship. Mrs. Harriet Waters won the trophy
in the second division by defeating Mrs.
Myron Marr, 1 up, in the final round.
The prize in the third division was won
by Mrs. George A. Magoon, and Mrs. M.
B. Sparks led her field in the last divi
sion. The summary:
