WINS CAROLINA
TOURNAMENT FOR WOMEN
Mrs. John D. Chapman of the Green
wich Country Club, a member of the
Griscomb Cup team and Pinehurst 's cot
tage colony, carried off her full share
of honors in the Carolina tournament
for women by winning the qualifying
medal and defeating Miss Louise Fordyce
of Youngstown, for first division honors
and the trophy in the final round of match
play. The Carolina is a new tournament
added this season and brought out a field
of four divisions.
The qualifying round resulted in a
triple tie between Miss Fordyce, Mrs.
Chapman and Mrs. Herman Ellis of Lon
don and Pinehurst, each of these ladies
taking 100 strokes to negotiate the round.
In the play-off, which was held after
match play rounds had been disposed of,
Mrs. Chapman came out victorious with a
score of 49-45-94, as against 49-47-46
for Miss Fordyce and 51-51-102 for Mrs.
Ellis.
Mrs. Chapman and Miss Fordyce ad
vanced to the finals by virtue of vic
tories in the semi-finals over Mrs. Ellis
and Mrs. Armstrong, respectively, and
took up the battle for the first division
trophy. Neither of these golfers were up
to their usual good game in this round.
Miss Fordyce, who qualified in the na
tional championship at Hollywood this
summer, repeatedly hit her shots off the
line and was off on putting. Mrs Chap
man was better on the greens than her
opponent and this figured largely in the
final outcome.
The second division trophy went to
Mrs. Myron W. Marr, who defeated Miss
Caroline Bogart, 2 up; Mrs. I. S. Robe
son disposed of Mrs. L. C. Beall, 1 up,
for third division honors, and Mrs. Lee
Page was victorious over Mrs. F. C.
Merrick for the fourth division trophy.

SURGICAL ASSOCIATION
IN SESSION AT
PINEHURST
Prominent surgeons from all sections
of the United States are gathered at
Pinehurst to attend the thirty-fourth
annual session of the Southern Surgical
Association, which opened at the Caro
lina on Tuesday of this week and will
remain in session through Thursday.
While sectional in its inception, the
association has for a number of years
been national in scope and the 200 sur
geons to which its membership is limited
represent practically every state in the
Union. Over 140 of the members, an
unprecedented attendance, will take part
in the proceedings here.
The convention opened with Dr. Ran
dolph Winslow of Baltimore, President,
presiding. The morning and evening of
the opening day were devoted to business
sessions, while golf and other recreation
occupied the attention of these distin
guished visitors during the afternoon.
Numerous social functions and sport
events have been arranged for the mem
bers and for the ladies in the party.
The Association dinner will be held at
the Carolina on Wednesday evening.
CHRISTMAS TREES
will be provided this year as usual for
about five hundred white and colored
native children. Those who desire to
share in this worthy undertaking may
leave their contributions at the desk of
either of the hotels or send direct to
