DECEMBER 22, 1921 PAGE 11 HAGEN AND MEIGS DEFEAT Walker and Parson in Fast Match MISS HELEN COPE WINS RIFLE CONTEST Playing in an amateur-professional ex hibition match over the Number 1 course on December 18, Walter Hagen, Western Open champion, and Dwight R. Meigs of Merion played against Cyril Walker, the Englewood professional, and Donald Parson of Youngstown, and won by 3 and .1. Hagen 's individual round of 34 34 68, which included an approximated 6 on one hole, was the best ball for his side. Walker ynd Parson had a best ball of 70. Hagen had just returned from a ten days' hunting trip and played the round with a set of borrowed clubs. He gath ered in five birdies in the course of his fine round, sank a 15 footer for a 2 ac the sixth and went down from the edge of the green for another 2 at the seven teenth. Parson, the Youngstown ama teur, also specialized in holes under par and got four of them, including a fine 2 at the fifteenth where he went down from off the green. Cyril Walker, still a little the worse for wear after an auto mobile accident in which he played a leading part on his way down here on Saturday, went around in 39-35 74 and registered three birdies. Hagen and Par son would have had a best ball of 65 if they had played as partners, and Walker and Hagen a best ball of 64. Miss Helen Cope of Delaware Water Gap, Pav won the prize for the week's best score at the rifle range with a lead ing target of 138 points out of a pos sible 150. Mrs. Lawrence Barr of Pitts burg, finished second, with 136, and Mrs. H. P. Boyd of Brookline, third, with 132. Jones, Pittsburgh, Pa. teurs who come down for the big tour nament will find in Parson a worthy de fender of the Pinehurst "regulars." All golfers are pleased with the changes made on the second nine holes of Number 3 course. Parker W. Whitte more has already been well beyond the big bunker at the seventeenth on his second shot, and it is likely that other long hitters will soon be able to get home on this hole in two. Two hours and forty-minutes is suf ficient time for foursomes to use in playing number two course, according to C. L. Becker, Donald J. Ross, H. C. Fownes, and others who have made a study of speed on that course. In future, foursomes which cannot maintain a 2:40 pace will be expected to allow others to go through. Jack Williams, a starter on number two course, is always on the job. He keeps in touch with every foursome on his course and it is a rare thing when players do not meet up with him some where during a round. Cyril Walker, the Englewood profes sional, is playing some fine golf here this week. He recently covered the Num ber 3 course, which has been altered and made more difficult than ever, in 71, and later went over Number 2 in 33-34 67. This round included four birdies and fourteen holes in par figures. Par for the course is 71. It is generally accepted that the new course at Mid-Pines is more difficult and; a harder test of golf than any of the courses at Pinehurst. This is well illus trated by the fact that Parker W. Whitte more, the crack amateur, holds the record of 77 for that course and is the first player to break 80 there. Miss Agnes Moebius of Nutley, N. J., who spent last season with her mother at the Pine Crest Inn, has returned as Mrs. Charles L. Mothersele. " Charlie" is now kept busy receiving congratula tions around :the golf club. Mrs; Mother .; sele will be pleasantly remembered by her many young friends whom she used to join on the bridal path last season. She is an enthusiastic horse woman. The young couple arrived in their Franklin car on the 21st, having made their honeymoon trip over the road, leaving Nutley on the 15th, the day of their wedding. They will remain into April.
