DECEMBER 22, 1921 PAGE 7 Country Club Notes The next scheduled tournament on the Country Club's program is the nine teenth annual Midwinter, which starts with the playing of the qualifying round on December 28, and continues at match play throughout the week. 106 golfers took part in this event last season, and indications are that this number will be exceeded this year. Thomas W. Lamont, New York banker, and Dr. Charles H. Mayo, probably the world's greatest surgeon, were among men of national reputation who enjoyed Pinehurst golf last week. Their scores, however, remain unpublished. George Crocker of the Brookline Coun try Club, has been enjoying golf at Pine hurst for several days with Parker W. Whittemore. Mr. Crocker, a senior player, tried the new Mid-Pines course and scored an 83. This was a brilliant round for a Senior golfer and quite the best that has been done there by any player able to register for the Seniors' championship. Mrs. Herman Ellis met with bad luck in the play-off of the tie for the medal in the Carolina tournament. Her second shot to the first hole fell into an almost impossible lie in a trap, so that she was just able to dislodge it. She did well to get the ball into a place from which she Avas able to play it at all. Golfers who make heel imprints in traps should remember to always smooth out the sand. Frank Keating is playing consistently in the early eighties. He is as danger ous as any player in Pinehurst when within putting distance of the hole. Miss Louise Fordyce of Youngstown, runner-up in the recent Carolina tourna ment, has returned to her home after a two weeks' visit at Pinehurst. During the course of her visit Miss Fordyce scored a 92 over the Number 1 course. She expects to return for the champion ships later in the season and her early season practice here should stand her in good stead. Miss Clarissa Metcalf, golf champion of Wellesley college, is spending the holi days in Pinehurst and keeping up her golf. Miss Metcalf is the only woman golfer and one of the few players who have registered a two on the thirteenth hole of Number 2 course. She once sank a full mashie shot to this green on her second stroke. Par for the hole is 4. Eddie Fitzgerald, Manager of the Holly Inn and Berkshire at Pinehurst, is very much worried over his golf game, which he fears has fallen off several points since last season. Eddie realizes that it will soon be time to take on some opponents from among his guests who find delight in taking the measure of their genial host. Jack Jolly of the St. Mungo Company, recently entertained a number of his friends at Pinehurst by demonstrating his new "Never Miss" ball. A ball over which Jack . claims his company has waved a magic wand (had it patented) and which will hold an absolute straight line on the putting green. William Wilson is worried because his tee shots do not go ''off the bat" like he wishes them to, but once on the green Willie is all confidence, and well he may be, for few golfers can equal him when it comes to sinking the ball. Harry Bowler, professional of the Winchester club in the Boston district, spent the past week in Pinehurst. He recently opened his golf school in Boston and was qualifying himself to give spe cial instruction on various shots required at Pinehurst, for he says he expects a number of his pupils to visit here during the season. This was Harry's first visit here and now he is a full-fledged Pinehurst rooter. W. W. Windle of the Worcester Coun try Club, is a vastly improved golfer. He attributes his correct style to a season under Willie Ogg, professional of that club who did so well in the heart of the Commonwealth that he has been given a three years' contract. Mr. Windle is chairman of the Greens' committee at Worcester and had the course in wonder ful condition for the Massachusetts ama teur championship last summer. Now Worcester wants a national event. Walter Howe of the Tatnuck Country Club, Worcester, Mass., will look out for Donald J. Ross's interests in the golf department at the Mid-Pines Club. Howe will be the golf instructor there. The Worcester golfer taught at Pinehurst last year. H. B. Emery is getting in more golf this season than usual as he is taking a great many guests over to Knollwood and doing eighteen holes with them over the new Mid-Pines course. Mr Emery says that after playing Mid-Pines he finds he can score better at Pinehurst. This is be cause Mid-Pines is such a severe test it brings out more golf, and shows up when a player returns to an easier course. All who play Mid-Pines enjoy it. Walter Hagen and Irving Robeson have deserted the golf links for the hunt ing grounds. They have been off after game for several days and will undoubt edly return to Pinehurst with some in teresting stories. Hagen ig far from being a novice with a shot gun. Surgeons, who are careful to use a deft and delicate touch in the operat ing room, are not so particular when they get a golf club in their hand. Like many others, they forget that a delicate and well timed touch is just as important in golf. This was demonstrated by members of the Southern Surgical As sociation who met here last week, but the doctors enjoyed their frolic on the links. Donald Parson is playing better than ever. He recently did a fine 73 on the number two course and the crack ama ( Continued on Page 11) THE JEFFERSON THE MOST MAGNIFICENT HOTEL IN THE SOUTH RICHMOND, VIRGINIA jy vat "i The many points of historic interest in, and around the City, and its central location make Bichmond a very desirable stop-over for tourists.
