JUDGE'S FORCES DEFEAT
SENATORS
Judge John Barton Payne of Chicago,
F. K. Curtis, New York, William Bibb,
Sleepy Hollow, and A. L. Walker of the
Richmond Country Club, comprised the
winning team in a four-ball match played
over the Number 3 course on Monday
against Speaker of the House, Gillett, ex
Senator C. B. Henderson of Nevada,
Senator G. M. Hitchcock,, Nebraska, and
Lindsay Russell of Tuxedo. The Judge's
side won by a decisive margin. Speaker
Gillett led his team with a medal round
of 100, while Walker's 98 was the best
of the Judge's forces.

"Meet Dr. Burch." said he to me,
As we stood together on the tee,
So I shook his hand and we started off
For a friendly round of rotten golf.
I put my drive in a nearby pit,
And told the world what I thought of it,
I missed a putt for a five and said
A few brief words th.at were flaming red.
Good Doctor Burch was a friendly chap
But he only grinned when he found a
trap,
And all that he said when he missed a
putt
For an easy win Avas a meek "Tut-tut! "
I thought it queer Avhen old Bill went
wrong
That he hummed a snatch of a Christian
song,
And I thought it strange when a drive he
sclaffed1
That he merely looked at the gang and
laughed.
Now the hair discloses the breed of dogs
But men look alike in their golfing togs,
And no one can tell from a sweater gray
The work of the man who comes to play.
I never had seen Doc Burch before,
So whenever I flubbed I roundly swore,
And I painted the air a livid hue
As all of the hypocrites will do.
"You're a wonderful man," says Bill
to me
As Ave stood at last on the eighteenth tee.
"I thought you knew that this Doctor
Burch
Is the minister over at my wife 's church. ' '
Then he laughed and laughed in his
ghoulish glee
As Ave both stood there on the eighteenth
tee;
And all I could do Avas to Avhisper low
The name of the place Avhere Bill could
go.
Noav I hold to this: that the title "Doc"
Is much too vague for the golfing flock,
But never again when I start to play
Shall I be caught in the self -same way.
I'll beAvare the friend with the fiendish
grin
Who ushers the unknown doctor in,
And I'll make him tell e'er I take the
course
Does he. doctor the soul or man or horse ?
