7Ke PINEHURST OUTLOOK, VOL. XXV. DECEMBER 29, 1921 NO. 4 PARSON AND SHANNON LEAD QUALIFIERS IN Mid-winter Tournament Pinehurst 's claim to the leadership as a winter golfing center was well sup ported on Wednesday of this week when more than 100 golfers teed off in the qualifying round of the annual Mid winter tournament, members of congress enjoyed rounds on the links, four of the country 's leading professionals played exhibition-matches and twenty boys, all under 15 years of age, played the quali fying round of a tournament all their own. Donald Parson and R. C. Shannon led the field in the qualifying round of the Midwinter with cards of 39-41 80 and tied, at that figure, for the medal. Thus it turned out that members of the Win ter colony defended the reputation of the local golfers and retained the honors from those who came down just for the tournament. Others to finish close up in the first division and who are con sidered to be very much in the running for match play are J. D. Chapman who qualified in third place with a round of 82, and Wm. Cushing, I. S. Robeson and J. W. Robb, all of whom turned in qualifying cards of 84. Another triple tie resulted for next place in this division between E. L. Scofield, M. L. Fearney and F. T. Keating, while E. C. Beall, D. P. Willard and N. W. Peters tied, at 87, and made up the last three players in the first sixteen. Only seven strokes separated the first and last man in this division. II. G. Waring who participated in the quadruple tie for last place hi 'the first division lost out on the play-off and heads the field in the second sixteen. All of the field played on the Number 2 course and qualified in five divisions, which will continue at match play throughout the week. The latter date, January 16, is correct and will mark the formal date of opening the club. A tournament, open to all ama teurs, will be held there the following Wednesday, January 18. THE PINEHURST CHAPEL SUNDAY SERVICES All the young bloods around Pine hurst are growing up to be golfers, and ' following in the footsteps of their fathers some of, the youngsters are playing golf that ig not only remarkable for boys so young, but would bear comparison 'vVLth the average rounds of the average adult golfer. '"Twenty of these lads all under 15 years of age banded themselves togeth er on Wednesday of this week and played the nine-hole qualifying round of the Christmas holiday tournament over the Number 3 course and will continue at match-play through the finals. It is surprising to know that in orde to make the first division the kids had to break 50 for the nine holes. Young George T. Dunlap, age 13, had the honor of repeating his last year's victory in this event and led the field with a round of 45 even 5's. His card was 565 645 464 45. Eugene Homans, age 12, was second at 46 and Forbes Wilson, age 11, and Walter Swoope, age 13, tied at 49. This quartette made up the first division. Less than 50 for nine holes does not sound particularly impressive until one looks up the records and finds that out of more than 300 grown-up golfers who usually play in the Spring tournament here less than one-third go over the Num ber 3 course under the 100 mark in the qualifying round. The boys qualified as follows: 'Holy Communion, Children's Service Morning Services and Sermon, 9:15 A. M. 10:00 A. M. 11:00 A. M. ROMAN CATHOLIC SERVICES Early Mass 6:15 A. M. Second Mass 10:30 A. M. When visiting priest is at Pinehurst an 8 o?el$ck mass is held. The Pinehurst Outlook is published weekly from November to May by Tb.9 Outlook Publishing Co., Pinehurst, N. C. O. H.
