KIRKWOOD COMING TO PINEHURST MISS CAROLINE BOQART WINS SILVER FOILS CONTEST A warm . welcome will be accorded Joseph H. Kirkwood, open golf cham pion of Australia, when he returns to Pinehurst for tho North and South open championship. Kirkwood will sail from Australia on February 24 and arrive in America in time to participate in the North and South at Pinehurst. Few champion athletes who have come to America have been as popular as Joe Kirkwood. He came to the United States last season, accompanied by Victor East, a very likable chap and these partners traveled through this country, Great Britain and France, always bringing credit to Australia. They are fine sportsmen and Kirkwood is a master golfer. He had as fine an average as any professional in the world last year, when his showing in champion ship fields in America, Great Britain and France are taken into the counting and this despite the fact that he had never played away from Australia before last year. Kirkwood is a dangerous com petitor in any field. He is known as a trick shot player and is capable of . giving a very entertaining exhibition of useful as well as trick shots.. A Pinehurst gallery was so pleased with Kirkwood 's exhibition last season that it presented him with a purse of more than $r00. He finished in the money in the North and South and until the open cham pionship at Washington was a money winner in every start he made, which included the British and French opens. In the big match play tournament held at Glen Eagles, Scotland, Kirkwood de- feated Harry Vardon and other promi nent players and was the runner-up to Abe Mitchell in the finals. Mitchell was forced to do two of his most brilliant rounds in order to beat Kirkwood by a narrow margin. It is likely that Kirkwood will make a permanent home in the United States and he' will be a great addition to the pro fessional ranks and a credit to the game. Mrs. Smith stepped into a little store at the corner to purchase seven-eighths of a yard of oil cloth. Mrs. Cohen, the storekeeper's better half, waited upon Mrs. Smith. Poor Mrs. Cohen, after puzzling a bit over the seven-eighths, stepped to the back of the store and called: "Papa, vat is seven-eighths? Mrs. vants dat much by the oil cloth.' ' The answer came back promptly: ' ' Mam ma, tell her we hain't got dat; she bed der take a yard unt a quarter." Alice: Gladys is an expert gossip. Virginia: Tells everything? ' The annual Flag Contest played by the Silver Foils on Thursday last, resulted in a Avin for Miss Caroline Bogart when she planted her flag near the twentieth green. Miss Bogart played with a handi cap 16, and had 12 strokes left after playing the eighteenth hole, but used up ten-shots on the nineteenth and planted her flag after two shots for the twentieth green . Mrs. C. S. Waterhouse, playing with a handicap 14, went three shots toward the nineteenth green and won second prize. She was thirty yards ahead of Mrs. John D. Armstrong, handicap 10, who had two shots from the same tee. Other contestants to pass the eigh teenth tee in safety were Mrs. D. Par son and Mrs. B. V. Covert who spent their last stroke with a drive for the nineteenth green. The field finished as follows: Planted flag. Mrs. John D. Chapman 18th Mrs. L., F. F. Wanner 18th Mrs. Myron W.
