FEBRUARY 16. 1922 NO. 10 MISS ELIZABETH GORDON WINS ST VALENTINE'S Mrs. Joseph Bydolek Runner-up Miss Elizabeth Gordon of the Meta comet Golf Club, Providence, made a clean sweep in the annual St. Valen tine's tournament for women by win ning the medal in the qualifying round and following this with a 3 and 2 vic tory over Mrs. Joseph Bydolek tif Buf falo, in the final round of match play. Miss Gordon is recognized as one of the country's leading women golfers, having been five times winner of the Rhode Island state championship, was runner-up to Miss Harriet Curtis for the Boston district title last summer and qualified in the national event at Shawnee. The St. Valentine's brought together a field of five divisions of eight play ers -each for match play rounds, and competition in the lower flights which were composed of higher handicap players, was quite as keen as in the first eight, even if the medal scores were not as low. The qualifying round resulted Avith all the favorites finishing in the first eight. Miss Gordon's medal card was 48-4694, and Mrs. John D. Chap man, winner of the medal in the Mid winter tournament, finished second Avith a score of 49-4897. Mrs. Bydolek was third with 100. The highest score to get into the first eight Avas 109. An unusual feature of the tourna ment Avas the fact that a large numb?r of the players AAore knickerbockers, and the AA'omen golfers are unanimously of the opinion that knickers will be very generally worn in golfing events in the North this summer. Miss Gordon did not have an easy time in winning any of her matches. She met Mrs. Charles Mothersele in the first round and was returned the Avin ner only after a closely contested match. Miss Gordon then played Mrs. Donald Parson ami again Avon by a narroAv mar gin. Mrs. Parson Avas around in 92, Avhich is a fine score and indicates that she is keeping pace Avith her husband in playing golf. In her match Avith Miss Gordon in the final, Mrs. Bydolek Avas off to a flying start by sinking long putts for 4 's at the first and second holes, and Miss Gordon had to put forth her best golf to over come this early lead. She made the turn two doAvn but squared the match by Avin ning the tenth and eleventh holes. She lost the twelfth, squared the match again at the thirteenth and Avent into the lead for the first time by Avinning the four teenth. Miss Gordon then took the fif- r . sir ( mm A. T. ROBERTS WINS IN TIN WHISTLE EVENT Under H. H. System The Tin Whistles' Tar and Bogey tournament played under the II. II. system on Friday last resulted in a victory for Capt. A. T. Roberts of Melrose, Scotland, Avho finished Avith 62 points to his credit. Donald Par son Avas the next high m:in at 61, three points ahead of John J). Chapman, GS, Avho led the remainder of the field in the Class A division. This event Avas originated by Major Harold E. Torter (Holworthy Hall) and :s one of the most unique and entertain ing affairs on the Tin Whistles' sched ule. Points are awarded on the basis of ten for an eagle, tAvo under par, par plus one point for a birdie, one under par, the par figure for a hole played in par, and par minus one , point for a hole played in bogey. The field Avas divided into four divi s'ons. R. H. Hunt led his field in the second division, while S.. II . Patterson and Charles Z. Eddy accounted for the prizes in Class C and D ' respectively .
