A LARGE CROWD AT . .
JOCKEY CLUB'S RACES
. An unusually large crowd turned out
on Saturday last to witness the running
of the Jockey Club's weekly races, the
feature of which from a monetary stand
point was the annual March Harness
race, styled the Class A. trot, and was
won in successive heats by J . McKin-
non's Margarite, driven by Smith. M
Sebree's Binland, driven by the oAvner,
finished second, and C. R. Clarke's Lee
McKerron won the short end of the
purse.
Silk Hose, owned by J. C. Thomas
and driven by Sebree, had clear sailing
in the Class B. pace and won both heats
of that event from Dupanville and Baby
Ruth.
The five and half furlong selling race,
the winner of which was to be sold at
auction, resulted in a victory for Mrs.
Gillam Brown's Lida of Earl, and this
horse was sold to Harry East.
A. L. Stevens' Troben, ridden by
Burns, outfooted the field in the six fur
long dash, defeating Mrs. L. F. F. Wan
ner's True as Steel and C. L. Whiting's
Yankee My Grain, which finished in the
order named.
Wasseon, running in the colors of
Henry B. Swoope and ridden by Wells,
equalled the track record for five and a
half furlongs when he won that event in
1.08 2-5, and this combination then made
it a double by winning the steeplechase
with Kate Glenn, who led all the way.
Among the visitors at the track re
cently were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Kane
of Haekensack, N. J., who were making
an extended visit at the Carolina. Mr.
Kane is the owner of the celebrated
Good Times stable of Goshen, N. Y., and
bears tire distinction of being the ama
teur champion driver in America. It
was only last summer that he won the
Governor's cup at Syracuse with Emma
Harvester, 2:04 1-4, a horse for which he
paid $20,000. Other celebrities in his
stable, which includes some of the best
horses on the Grand circuit, are Brusil
off, for which he paid $30,000; John
Henry, with a record of 2:01 1-4, and
Suavity, the champion two-year-old trot
ter of last year. This last named horse
is the property of Mrs. Kane, and of
which she is justly proud. During their
visit here Mr. Kane took part in the
races, winning several events for local
owners, and on one occasion lie and Mrs.
Kane drove two yearling pacers in a
match race in which Mrs. Kane defeated
her illustrious husband. It is likely that
Mr. Kane will send down some of his
own horses next season, in which event
Pinehurst race-goers Avill witness son""
racing of the highest order.
