PINEHURST OUTLOOK, VOL. XXV. APKIL 13, 1922 NO. 18 HENRY J. TOPPING WINS NORTH AND SOUTH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP F. K. Robeson, Runner-up Henry J. Topping of Greenwich, won the North and South amateur champion ship for the second time when he defeat ed Filmore K. Robeson of Rochester, .'J and 2, in the 36-hole final round of the twenty-second renewal of this event on Saturday last. Topping won the title in 1913 and was runner-up in 1915, the win ner that year being Robeson, his oppon ent this year. Topping was three down at the end of the morning round in his match with Robeson, but he had already demon strated his ability to come from behind and many of his supporters expected that he would overtake Robeson in the final 18 holes. He played a very deter mined game in the afternoon and his golf was much better than in the morn ing. This, added to the fact that Robe son lost his tee shots, enabled the Green wich player to catcli his opponent and pass him. A large gallery followed the players in the afternoon. Topping overplayed his second shot to the first hole but put his third close to the cup and halved Robeson's well played par 4. Topping obtained a fortunate break at the sec ond hole and one that must have given liim confidence for the remainder of the game and caused his opponent no little worry. His second shot was just at the edge of the rough to the left of the green. Robeson had played two good shots and seemed assured of a four, but Topping proceeded to hole out a three and cut Robeson's lead to two holes. Robeson drove into the woods at the third and took three to get on, but Top ping, who was on the green in two, took three more and they halved in 5 s . The fourth was Avon by Robeson with a par tour, Topping putting a mashie-niblick s,lt in the trap in front and taking five. The fifth was halved in 5's, al though Topping had the advantage when Kiibeson hooked into the rough and found ,,,H directly behind a high whisker so that he was barely able to get out. Topping was over the green on his second took three more. Robeson lost the sixth hole, three to although he was well inside when ihn tee shots had been played. Top ri!lr's mashie struck just beyond the tl;iPs at the right but he ran his second ") the side of the hill and the ball rolled Ui,1'in putting distance. He got his tl:l "o and Robeson took three from off (Continued on Page 9) hi 3 .0 O a it lli mL, Two views of the gallery at the home green during Open North and South Championship THE PINEHURST CHAPEL SUNDAY SERVICES ROMAN CATHOLIC SERVICES Holy Communion 9:00 A.M.
