The Christmas Races THERE was plenty of excitement at the races last week when the Jockey Club put on five running and harness races, a steeplechase and four novelty contests for its Christmas day pro gram, and an unusually large crowd turned out to witness the sport. The Christmas Special, a trotting event, was won in successive heats by Martin J., owned and driven by Frank Thomas, of Wash ington. D. C. W. H. Cane, owner of the famous Good Time stable of Goshen, N. Y., who is considered the champion amateur driver of America, "just couldn't sit in the grandstand and watch 'em run" so he took a seat with the professionals in the Championship pacing race and drove A. W. Hodges' Love Berry to victory in both heats of that event. Mr. Cane's remarkable horsemanship came prominently into play in the first heat of this event when he found himself in a tangle caused by a horse breaking at his side and at the same moment the horse in front of him broke. It was only by very fast work on the part of Mr. Cane that a serious mixup was avoided. The incident caused Mr. Cane's horse to drop back to fourth position, but once clear he came on to an easy victory. After get ting the pole in the second heat he took the lead with the word go and was never headed. Rice and Wilmet, who have quite a formidable string of racers here, made a clean sweep in the running races and copped first money in all three events. They started festivities by taking the six-furlong sprint with St. Jude, a two-time winner here, and their success continued when Blue Jay got down in front in the five furlong dash and old Spearlene came romping home on the head end of the procession over the seven-furlong journey. Miss Helen Waring's Ray-O-Light, who has pretty well mono polized the honors in the steeplechase division, finally had to bow to defeat. The Red Gables stable's Kate Glenn stepped to the front with the fall of the flag in this event and made every post a winning one.
