The Youngsters' Tournament t .'. .. .. THOSE more or less ancient rivals, Forbes Wilson, age 12, and George T. Dunlap, Jr., age 13, clashed in the final of the third annual Pinehurst Junior Championship Tourna ment, on Friday last, and Forbes won the match, the trophy and the title by the close margin of 1 up and with all decisive aid of a finely played par 4 on the last hole of the contest. With the last putt on the last hole of this match there came to an end, for the time being at any rate, the hitherto unchallenged supremacy of young George Dunlap in juvenile tournament golf at Pinehurst. George won the qualifying medal and the tournament and title in 1920, when this event was first staged, and he repeated the dual feat last year. Twenty-two youngsters, ranging in age from 8 to 15 years, took part in the qualifying round and were taken into camp by young Dunlap and Walter Swoope, who tied for the medal with mutual rounds of 46 for the first nine holes of number three. Later on in the week the two boys played off for the medal and another tie, at 42, resulted. The second play-off will be played at a later date. Forbes Wilson qualified for the First Four, with 50; Carlo Paterno got in with a round of 56, and a round of 59 was the highest that qualified for the Second Division. Little John Bradford Armstrong, age 8 and the baby of the tour nament, qualified for the fourth four with a card of 74. Johnnie, unlike some of us, is improving with age. Last year, when he was seven, it took John Bradford 150 strokes to cover the same distance in this Junior event. Dunlap, playing against Walter Swoope, went out in 41 to Swoope's 44 and won by 2 and 1. Walter had a 3 on the 221 -yard fifth hole and Dunlap followed suit with a 3 on the sixth. Wilson played against Carlo Paterno and won by 4 and 2, with the help of a rather remarkable 2 on the sixth hole. Johnnie Armstrong won what we believe to be the first note worthy victory . in his tournament career by defeating Hubert O'Brien by 3 and 1. The title contest, between Forbes Wilson and George Dunlap, went to Wilson by 1 up, as already related. Wilson played an exceptionally long ball all through the round and this more than offset his opponent's slightly better work around the greens. Wilson was 43 for the nine holes and Dunlap 47.
