A record breaking total of close to 150 men and women members took part in the proceedings, the men playing on the Championship course and the women, who were divided into two handicap classes, played Number 1 and. Number 3 circuits. In addition to the regular tournaments, the members held daily putting contests on the clock greens in front of the Club. o A total of fifty-five prizes were given in the course of the tourna ment. They were awarded as follows : Four in the special medal round on Saturday; four in the qualifying round; twenty-five in the men's tournament proper; four in the best-ball handicap and one in the putting contest. In the women's division there were three prizes in the qualifying round; two in their tournament proper; five in the nine-hole medal play; one in the putting contest and four in the mixed foursomes. o In the course of a large golfing party like the Advertisers had many unusual things happen. It is said that the score of one of the ladies took 121 strokes for nine holes; that she never missed a trap or bunker and lost eleven balls. But that is what makes the game. It is a safe bet that this lady, like all beginners, will stick to it and will soon be able to break 100 for eighteen holes. Possibly some lost balls accounts for this one. One of the men players drove into the woods with a Spalding 50. When he played a mashie shot onto the fairway he found a "J. H." His next shot sliced to the woods again and he played to the green. When he sank the putt and picked up the ball he found he had a Silver King. Tables were turned on Howard Ruggles, who defeated N. J. Pea body in the match race at the race track on Wednesday, when they later engaged in a golf match in which they agreed to play for the brand new silk shirts both had donned for the day's sport. It was a hard fought match from beginning to end, with Ruggles leading most of the way but finally losing the match and the shirt by missing a four-foot putt on the home green, after which Mr. Ruggles was called upon to surrender his stake and proceed to the hotel without it. o Willie Hunter, former British champion who is making a visit to Pinehurst, played the first nine holes of Number 2 course in 34 and finished out the round with a fine 71. Hunter's good round was made in a match in which he and R. C. Shannon won by 1 up from John D. Chapman and F. T. Keating. Hunter started out with birdies on the first two holes and halved the fifth with Chapman in a stroke under par. Shannon came to Hunter's assistance on two holes coming home. Chapman and Keat ing finished with a round of 75 each. A curious and unusual feature of the match was the playing of the fourteenth hole in a stroke under par by all four contestants. Birdie scores are not particularly uncommon on the fourteenth, but it is doubtful that four of them ever happened before in a single match. Miss Blancke Wins Rifle Shoot Miss Elsa Blancke, of Essex Fells, N. J., won the prize in the weekly target tournament at the Rifle range with a high score of 134 out of a possible 150. Mrs. A. W. Stanley, of New Britain, Conn., finished second with 127, and Mrs. Lora Kehaya, of New York, was third with 120. MADISON AVENUE COR.
