Can't Fool Alex Ross
Frank Craven, during the local engagement of "The First Year,"
was invited to play golf by Eddie Guest. Alex Ross, the Detroit
Golf Club professional, went along for a few holes and the actor
either because Ross was watching him or because he was just
naturally off his game, played very poorly. Normally Frank is
a good golfer, but on this occasion, he couldn't hit a single shot
right. Finally he felt that he ought to make some sort of an apology
for his sorry performance. Turning to Ross, he was about to launch
an explanation when Alex interrupted him by saying, "Don't say
a word, Mr. Craven. I understand perfectly. It's just the first
year" Detroit Athletic Club News.
Judge Way and Knollwood

with a case of pneumonia. That sudden severe change is one of the
drawbacks about the warmer climate, and every business man has
to keep in readiness for just such a call at any time. Here the
weather does not get so warm and enervating, but is bracing enough
to keep a man in right vigorous form. He can slip on his overcoat,
drop off in Pittsburgh, laugh at a bit of snow, hang around there
two or three days and feel pretty fair and run away again as soon as
matters are attended. This is the place, and I just thought I would
take a hold of a bit of this Sandhill stuff, and make myself a home,
and incidentally fix it so I can have some neighbors about me when
they feel like coming."
Judge Way put his finger on Knollwood Village after he had
been pretty familiar with all quarters of the United States and much
of the rest of the world, and after he had passed it under the review
of that judicial scrutiny he gives everything. Probably few men
have located in the Sandhills who gave the proposition the same
weighing of evidence, or who are as capable of determining the value
of the evidence. And having located here, he says he thought he
would rather be busy working around a little, helping to fix things
up a little than to be idle, so he has added to his land holdings and
built his houses and fixed up the territory he has bought, and is
planning to fix up that which he has just acquired. In the last year
nearly a score of big men have bought locations at Knollwood
Village, and on the two roads more than a mile of frontage has been
taken into the hands of those who will develop and help to make the
village what its projectors had in mind when the plans were con
ceived. Should this year equal last year at Knollwood Village the
development will be of marked proportions by the time another fall
rolls around, for although most of the progress at the village does
not yet show prominently in the construction all the preliminaries are
arranging for a lot of work, and already enough is blocked out to
make the immediate future of the settlement one of pronounced
aCne to frame up a picture of Knollwood Village two or three
years from now when the building sites around the run of the hill
that incloses the golf course will be occupied with attractive houses
and made the homes of interesting people. I like to walk around
that fringe of hill and look down on the picture that already presents
itself, for enough shows there now to be interesting already, to say
nothing of the prophetic note that is in evidence.

You May Think
What Judge Way is doing at Knoll
wood will have a big influence on the
village.
But You Know
What Judge Way sees at Knollwood
will have a bigger influence there.
CJudge Way is a highly trained and clear-headed business
specialist. He is buying Knollwood property because he
sees value there.
HThe most significant feature of the whole thing is that
he is making a home for himself at Knollwood Village.
(With money enough to retire from business, after looking
over the whole globe, he picks Knollwood Village and set
tles there.
