The Best Road South
THERE have been conflicting reports recently concerning
what is the best road from the North to the South, and for
the benefit of those interested in this question we are pleased
to print the following report gotten up by the Foster Travel Service
and which has been verified both north and south of Pinehurst
within the past ten, days. We are advised that when someone
reports road trouble, it is because the motorist has become confused
by the many conflicting directions and has not taken the route
mapped out below.
NEW YORK WASHINGTON 242 miles
Via Newark, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Good Road. Alternate
route to avoid larger cities. Via Newark, Easton, Bethlehem, Read
ing, Lancaster, York, Gettysburg, Frederick. All good roads.
WASHINGTON-RICHMOND 134.5 miles
Via Alexandria, Dumfries, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania. 33 miles
hard surfaced roads, balance good gravel.
RICHMOND-PINEHURST 285.1 miles
Via Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Skelton, Lacrosse, Bracey, Henderson,
Franklinton, Wake Forest, Raleigh, Cary, Apex, San ford, Carthage.
Good roads, concrete and sand clay.
A new road has been built from Skelton to Henderson giving better
road conditions than, going on through South Hill, Oxford and
Durham. Road is now open and in good condition. Short detour
just North of Henderson (where road is not quite finished), but
detour is plainly marked and over good roads, via Warrenton into
Henderson. From Sanford use Carthage-Concord route as far as
Carthage, then South into Pinehurst. This is also a new road in
fine condition.
PINEHURST-AUGUSTA 219.5 miles
Via Aberdeen, Hoffman, Rockingham, Cheraw, Patrick, McBee,
Bethune, Camden, Blaney, Pontiac, Columbia, Lexington, Batesburg,
Monetta, Aiken. The route has some concrete and balance sand
clay. There is no trouble on this road, but for 30 miles between
Cheraw and McBee, it is very rough sand. (Many people arc being
sent over a detour around this Cheraw road, but the detour is over
clay roads which are slippery and in some places dangerous in wet
weather. The rough road is preferable at any time.)
AUGUSTA-SAVANNAH 127.6 miles
Via Waynesboro, Sylvania, Springfield. Roads hard surfaced and
sand clay, some of which is a little rough, but no trouble has been
reported this season.
SAVANNAH-JACKSONVILLE 176.8 miles
Via Midway, Darien, Brunswick, Woodbine, Yulee. First 17 miles
concrete and shell, 45 miles sand clay, 34 miles shell and concrete,
56 miles sandy dirt, 10 miles rough sand, last 22 miles shell and
pavement. This road is passable at any time and is the best way
into Jacksonville. The only trouble experienced this season has been
between Darien and Brunswick, where the road is soft in wet
weather. If there have been recent rains it is safest to put on
chains before leaving Darien.
B. H. Scott Repeats at Traps
B. H. Scott, of New York, who won the prize in the weekly
handicap target tournament last week, led the field again this week
with both a high net and high gross target. Scott's score was 74-9-83.
J. P. Clark, also of New York, finished second this week with
a score of 64-15-79, and a tie, at 75, resulted between D. J. Renkert
and J. B. Whiteacre, both of Canton, Ohio. Other leading scores
in the shoot were John Ebberts, of Buffalo, who finished with a
net score of 72, and T. C. Garribaldi, of Chicago, 65.
Mrs. A. W. Stanley, of New Britain, Conn., led the shooters at
the rifle range this week and won the prize with a high target of
135 breaks out of a possbile 150. Miss Elsie Blancke, of Essex
Fells, N. J., was the next high gun, at 130, and Mrs. John W.
Raymond, of Boston, finished third with a score of 115.
