He couldn't see it, where it had gone, or anything else. "Ah thinks yo' ball done walked right into de hole," muttered the caddy. They went up to the green and that's just what the ball had done, gone into the hole. It was a bird 4 on a par-5 hole and from a lie like Marsh had found for the 130-yard shot called for. No wonder they stick to the game. o There was some snappy scoring on the links during the week past. But when the Reverend Dr. T. A. Cheatham, rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church here addresses this golf population next time, he ought to choose as his text, "How to Make a 74 in Golf." He knows and proved it this last week in the tourney of the Tin Whistle outfit here. Dr. Cheatham went out in 37 and back in the same. It is said he took but 18 putts. But that's only one putt per green and he denies the "charge." Here's his card : Out 554, 453, 53337. In 544, 443, 5443774. One of the prettiest bits of golf scoring, however, that comes to mind offhand was that done by Paul Nevens in a golf match with A. P. Palmer, Brooklyn. Nevens rounded the links No. 3 in 72, said to be the best score made there all season. It reads like this: Nevens Out. 444, 433, 43433; In 454, 436, 454 39 72. Palmer also accomplished something not read of in any old book for he went out in 40, good enough for most folks. But he went a stroke-or-more-a-hole worse coming in and ran up a 50 for a total of 90. That's a new way to make a 90 which you might try out some day.
