This good horse formerly raced in the colors of G. Nibbs, who is now racing a string at Tia Juana, Mexico, but was owned the past few years by Miss Helen Waring, of Pinehurst. Melos was 16 years old. He was sired by the great race horse Bannockburn out of Simple Interest, and at the time of his retire ment he was the oldest horse racing on standard tracks. He raced on practically every track in the United States and Canada and won more than $30,000 in purses during his racing career. Nibbs, his former owner, always spoke of this horse as being his meal-ticket and said that regardless of what luck he had with the others in his string he could always rely on Melos to more than pay the expenses of his stable. When the old fellow's racing days were over he was acquired by Miss Waring who kept him as a pet so that he might spend his declining years in ease and comfort at the Pinehurst track. SUNDAY SERVICES Pinehurst Chapel Holy Communion 9:00 A. M. Children's Service 10:00 A. M. Morning Service and Sermon 11:00 A. M. Roman Catholic Early Mass 6:15 A. M. Second Mass 10:30 A. M. When Visiting Priest is at Pinehurst an 8 o'clock Mass is Held Influences That Make Pinehurst ( Continued from page 5) because of these manifestations that they are interested and are quietly picking up a bit of orchard one place, or a building site another place, or financing some business venture in the com munity, or in other manner tying in with the modern progress that has struck its swing. Pinehurst is packed to the roof with visitors. So are the hotels at the other villages. Mid-Pines has to be called on to help care for some of the overflow, and the golf course over there is alive with players just as at Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Mid-Pines is helping to hold up the picture to an increased multitude and friends are telling friends. In the last week three different men have told me the same story. "I liked the looks of what I saw, and I bought some of it. And I have a couple (or in one case three or four), of my friends down here and they are picking up some odds and ends that look good." I am guessing from what I have heard in the last three weeks from men I have talked with along this line that men of this character will invest in this section within the next two or three years half a million dollars, and that their influence will incline their friends to follow with an indefinite amount, to say nothing of what their example will mean to others over a longer period. Unless my system of guessing is all wrong we have entered on a wholly new period of progress, and it will unfold a future that is broader than many of us have ever had the audacity to dream.
