The Hurd Cup Race
THE feature event of the Jockey Club races this week was the
First Annual Hurd Cup race and was won by Firing Line,
owned and ridden by Arthur Hillcoat of Memphis, Tenn.
The Clockmender, winner of the Swigert Cup a few weeks ago,
came in second, and Mrs. C. H. Norton's entry, No Trump, with
Snyder up, finished third.
This event was run over the six furlong journey and was named
in honor of N. S. Hurd, donor of the cup and one of the founders
of the Pinehurst Jockey Club. It will be an annual fixture on the
Club's schedule and Mr. Hurd will donate the cup each year. The
race created a great deal of interest among horsemen and race
goers at Pinehurst and Mr. Hurd was the recipient of much praise
for his generous sportsmanship.
Only four horses accepted the issue in this event and because of
his victory in the Swigert Cup The Clockmender went to the post
a hot choice with Firing Line second in favoritism. Dr. Giltner
sent the field away in perfect alignment. The ultimate winner broke
forwardly and stole off to a comfortable lead but relinquished it for
a time to The Clockmender who, at one stage of the journey, seemed
to have the race and the cup securely tucked away, but when the
field swung for home the real racing began. The Clockmender was
in front with Firing Line close at his heels. Hillcoat drove his
mount through a narrow opening and in one of the most spectacular
finishes seen here in some time he overhauled the leader in the last
twenty yards and flashed under the wire a head in front.
The afternoon's program included, in addition to the Cup race,
three harness races, another dash over the flat and a special match
race between horses driven by Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cane, owners
of the Good Time Stable, in which Mrs. Cane defeated her illus
trious husband.
Uncle Sand, entered by N. S. Hurd and ridden by Snyder,
accounted for the five and half furlong event with Anvil, ridden by
Miles, and Miss Helen Waring's entry, Joe Milliner, following in
the order named.
