Butler) ONE of the resources available in Moore county, and which will have a marked influence on the advantages of living in this section is the electrical possibility that is every day unfolding wider in the neighborhood. Some years ago the water power of the region was taken in hand by I. F. Chandler, who developed several powers, and later he sold out to John R. McQueen, who had also been working along that line in the county and vicinty. When Mr. McQueen took the entire field into his hands he at once commenced to broaden out, and he has increased the supply of power to meet the increasing demands. But he has not yet gone to the limit that he is heading, and which he can reach. He has built dams at a number of points on the streams, and has sites for more, and in addition he has built a small steam auxiliary at Lake view. This steam plant is but a suggestion of what is likely to follow in the future, for the days that are ahead are destined to call for a great deal more electric power than is used now. For tunately Mr. McQueen has sites for more dams, and besides the water power he is the head of the Carolina Coal Company, which has mines within a few miles of his water power plants, and he will be always in shape to provide steam power to supplement his electric power plants at such times as the water in the streams is low, or when peak loads call for a greater supply. In this respect the Sandhill Power Company, of which Mr. Mc Queen is president, is better situated than any other electric plant in North Carolina, for he will be in shape to generate power at the mine, and save all cost of freight on coal. He will be above the danger of railroad troubles, for no strikes can interrupt the move ment of coal to his steam plant, nor the distribution of his power, as he has wires now connecting the mines with his power plants, although he has not yet established steam plants at the mines. But that is the logical step as fast as more power is needed, and is avail able at any day. When McQueen has expanded his plants to the extent that the county will ultimately call for, Moore county will be one of the best served communities in the United States. Village and factory will be provided with current for all purposes. Then will commence here in this neighborhood one of the most complete adoptions of electricity known. For the homes that are growing up will call for all manner of electrical device and appliance. Already at the Pine hurst Electric shop appliances and equipment are provided for builders and homes that can do almost anything but provide the vittles. To furnish light is no longer the whole job bf the electric wire. In some of the houses on the McQueen lines much of the house work is done by electricity. Washing, sweeping, some of the cooking, running the sewing machine, or any other machine about the house as well as about the mill or factory, is common. The wire charges the battery for the car, and for the radio. It runs the fan that cools the house in summer, and when a hot water bottle is needed in the sick room an electric plug is applied to a bit of an outfit that comes from the electric shop, and everything is in shape. The wire will furnish the power and light. The electric shop will provide the rest, and between the two Moore county will intro duce innovations in . the next half dozen years that will make this look like a new world. Not only in the villages, but on the farms of the county light and power wires are finding their way, the farmers joining together in groups to secure a power line into their com munities, and from the main wires the current is scattered over the whole group of buildings until before long all of rural Moore county will be operated electrically. It may be that before very long the street lighting system will be extended until a road lighting scheme will cover the chief highways of the county. (Continued on page 14) FAIRWAY COTTAGE A. S.
