At the Races A LOT OF PEP was injected into the racing at Pinehurst this week with the arrival of a large number of high class racers that will winter here, and the crowd witnessed some of the best racing that has ever been seen here. Forty-eight horses were entered in the six events that made up the afternoon's card. Carmeleta Hall, a brown mare owned by D. H. Pope and driven by Spencer Harris, both of Raleigh, N. C, carried off chief honors and crowned herself with glory by stepping a mile in 2:1114 to win the second heat of the December trot, thereby establishing what is said to be an American record for a half mile track at this season of the year. This mare was away badly in the first heat but she indicated that she possessed remarkable speed by coming from next to last place in a large field to finish second. She was away well the last two heats and once in front she was never headed. Bud R., owned and driven by N. I. Edwards, of Laporte, Ind., finished second, and Layton drove Bonita Guy into third place. Lady Glover, entered by A. G. Ireland, of Chicago, and driven by Frank Thomas, was another of the recent arrivals to display dazzling speed and won both heats of the Winter pace with ease in 2:1314, defeating Anna Mack, driven by. Beck, and Little Mike, with Dispannett aboard, and several others of the first flight. The Combination harness event brought out a field of nine starters and resulted in a well-earned victory for Mrs. A. Arm strong's Nellie A., driven by Crow, with Williams second, and Lucky Maiden, third. The fields in the running events were large and well balanced, and turned out to be a veritable jubilee for the diminutive jockey O'Hara, who made a clean sweep of the card and rode all of the winners. He started his triumphant march by winning the five and one-half furlong dash with Assumption and followed it with vic tories astride Frank Boyd and Brookfield in the seven and five furlong events respectively.
