WAS KIPLING A PROPHET?
We are all more or less familiar with the lines of j
the Recessional, and its prophecy of the overthrow
and decay of the British civilization, coupled with
a prayer to the "God of the Nations to Spare Us Yet";
but other lines, holding before the eyes of the England.
of other decades the prophecy of this, are not so fa- ?
miliar.
Hear Kipling as he sounds the warning for the ci
effects of decadance, of ease, of the loss of the spint tl
of sacrifice, of the failure to bolster the dykes that fi
were laboriously builded by our fathers to hold back T
the evil forces that would flood us with paganism and H
slavery: a:
"Our world has passed away, fc
? 11 Ki
in wantoness o erinrown.
There is nothing left today N
But steel and fire and stone! iti
"Comfort, content, delight, a;
The ages' slow-bought gain, tl
They shrivelled in a night, si
Only ourselves remain!" tc
; C
And again, with prophetic eye, he told us of the R
betrayal of our spiritual trust, and the payment that
would have to be made in blood for that betrayal: h
i jg
"Now we can only wait till the day, wait |
and apportion our shame; These are the ^
dvkes our fathers left, but we would not look
* s<
to the same. Now it may be we have slain ^
our sons, as our fathers we have betrayed." ^
What an indictment! What a warning! But the a
people have ever been slow to heed the warnings of ^
prophets. Even today, in the midst of a great war, in q
which our lives, our fortunes, our spiritual heritage,
" ?A. 1 W
and our very right to exist as ireemen are at staKe,
we find thousands of men and women who are unable
to concentrate upon the great issues involved;
who are still more interested in the amount of money ?
that goes into the pay envelope, the salary check, or ^
on the profit side of the ledger than they are in the
material and spiritual salvation of a civilization. Even *
today there are many men, broadcasting on the radio,
writing for the newspapers, speaking and working on
the floors of Congress, who are more interested in s<
the petty political interests of certain groups, in c
bringing about discredit to certain political leaders, i]
than they are in winning this, the greatest of all wars, ?
with the greatest stake involved of any war since the q
world emerged from the Dark Ages. And, if you will n
check the list of commentators, of editors, of speak- s
ers, of Congressmen and Senators, who are today 1
finding issues in which to interest the people, divert *
their minds from the main objective, and in the doing a
discredit the President of the United States and his f
cabinet members, you will find that they are the t
same people who, a few months ago, were doing all v
within their power to discredit the Administration, J
and in so doing, prevented this country from being x
prepared totally to meet the onslaught when it came,
and gave aid and encouragement to the enemies of t
our country and of our civilization. The same men 1
and women within the churches, who werq pacifists j

OUR DEMOCRACY?- ?by Mat 1 Jj

-Ft6.
These men and women forget the eternal prin- j
pie that the way to gain one's life is to lose it; that
le only great life is the one that is willing to sacrice
and suffer to the utmost in a righteous cause.
' ' " *
he Master gave His life to estaoiisn our unrisuaiuty.
e suffered much to give us the precious things that
re ours. We need a church today that is willing to
)llow Him in sacrifice, to maintain that which He
Dught at so great a price. We need a church militant,
ever have we needed more a church that will prac-,
ce the Christian virtues of sacrifice, and go forth
1 a mighty crusade founded upon the eternal verities,
s we need it now. This is a war for the freedom of
le souls of men. Who is not willing to sacrifice in
nch a cause? Those of His followers who are willing
) follow the Master through Gethsemane and to the
ross, these alone are able to share in His glorious
esurrection.
"If any man would come after me, let him deny
imself, and take up his cross, and follow me." That
; the challenge of the ages. It speaks of no milk and
ater Christianity. It tells of no flowery beds of ease,
t offers no good jobs with handsome salaries. |It pre3nts
no big dividends in money. It seeks not the
est positions in church or state or business. It simply
3lls of the sacrifice that must be made by any man or
ny nation if that man or that nation is to find salation.
In it lies the key to our door of emergence
rom the present darkness that encompasses our
Christianity and our Civilization. In this dark hour '
re all, churchmen, politicians, business men, labor,
lust accept it; else we perish.
Look to the dykes! Let us make the slaughter of
ur sons as little as is possible! Let us not continue
0 betray our fathers!
