The moonshiners are getting sunn t
for a fact Deputy Marshal Harris
and another were over in Alexander
looking around, la-t week, and wheu
night came on put up their horses
to -peml the night. While ihey
slept some moonshiners or their
friends stole their horses and lode
them back into Catawba and turned
them loose. Of course their object
was accomplished, as the officers next
morning went iti search of horse
thieves and not blockade stillers.
Vt the twelfth annual session of
the V. M C A. which recently con
vened in Charlotte, one hundred and
twenty-five delegates were present -
the lai£f«i convent ion ever he d in
the State. Over $1,500 were raised
for the State work for the coming
year. The association was never so
promising m the State as now. W.
O Bulkhead was elected president,
and Prof H. S. Smith and J. C. Join
er respectively first and second vice
presidents, and S. B. Weeks secreta
ry. Why not have a A M C. A. in
Hickory ?
The Bank of 'Hickory moved into
its new building Monday, and l
ready for business over the cleanest
and prettiest counter, within the
most richly frescoed walls, and on
the most beautiful and nicely polish
ed tloor of native woods in the coun
try. The truti inwardness of this
move makes this block the most val
uable as well as the most popular now
in the town. Bank, postoffice, print
ing office, law office, dental office,
shoe shop, boef market and racket
store. .What more can mortal now
wish than he onn get heie?

good deal of important bu-iness was

the ground, of about 40 acres, for 5
years. A committee was appointed
to finish up the fair grounds as soon
as pos-ible. It was decided to hold
the fourth annual fair here on the
lSth. HUh, 20th and 21st of Septem
ber. 18S8. All present expressed
themselves as being greatly encour
aged as to the success of their fair.
The association adjourned to meet
on the 12th of May. 1888, at 4 p. m.

has brought them to their present
