Help Wanted Fate clashes with reality in ‘Sleepless’ If I had to name my favorite movie, I would have to say Rob Reiner’s “When Harry Met Sally ... .” So when I saw the previews for “Sleepless in Seattle” starring Sally I mean, Meg Ryan —and the lovable Tom Hanks of “Big” fame, I knew I had to see it as soon as it hit the theaters. But “Sleepless,” though entertaining in its own right, is no “Harry Met Sally.” Based on the premise of love controlled by destiny, “Sleepless” is the story of how Sam (Hanks) and Annie (Ryan), who live on opposite sides of the coun try, end up together and live happily ever after like a Disney classic, ex cept with the addition of Sam’s 8-year old son,Jonah. It’s Jonah, played by the adorable Ross Malinger, who sets everything in motion. On Christmas Eve, from his house in Seattle, he calls a national radio shrink show, which Annie hap pens to be listening to in her car on the East Coast. The plot is full of forced and un forced coincidences, which lead Annie ’ s best friend, played by comedienne Rosie O’Donnell, last seen in “A League of Their Own,” to say everything is “a sign,” is destiny. But “Sleepless” just doesn’t have the depth and realism of “Harry Met Sally,” in which two friends slowly fall in love overtime —amuch more likely premise. Hanks and Ryan appear in only four scenes together during all of “Seattle" —too few to convince the audience that the two are meant to be. The ending leaves the audience pondering: “Des tiny is great, but can they make it last? Will Annie move to Seattle and quit her dream job at The Baltimore Sun?” The beauty of “Harry Met Sally” is that the story is framed by the tales of Overthephone: 962-0252 9am-spm VISA & MC I Real Estate | Real Estate I Kerr Lake , WuSIDC | On July 10th at Ipm, TRU-BAR Inc. will offer for sale several lots ranging from 1/2 acre to 1-1/2 acre. I Tickets S2O Public, sls Students, available at the door Yi-Hsin Chang Movie Review happy couples who were destined to be— which makes Harry and Sally’s romance so common, so real. “Sleep less” seems superficial in comparison.' It’s not unfair to compare “Sleep less” to “Harry Met Sally.” In fact, it begs for comparison. Not only does “Sleepless” have the same leading ac tress as “Harry Met Sally,” it’s directed by Nora Ephron, who wrote the screen play for the first movie. And “Harry Met Sally” director Rob Reiner makes an appearance in “Sleepless,” too, as Sam’s friend who gives him advice about women of the ’9os. But even if “Sleepless” has an un likely plot, it has its memorable high points. Hanks’ superb performance as the rare sensitive man barely keeps the young Malinger from stealing the show. The best scenes in the movie involve the father-and-son pair. In one scene, in which Jonah sees his father kissing a woman the son doesn’ t like, Jonah yells, “Help! My dad’s been captured by a ho!” The movie also raises the idea of what a “guy” movie is for example, “Field of Dreams” versus what types of movies appeal to women. “Sleep less” not only shows clips of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr’s “An Affair to Re member” —a “girl” movie it draws parallels to the romantic classic. As for Annie’s fiance, Walter (Bill Pullman), he’s just too allergy-ridden and predictable for the impulsive and hopeless romantic Annie. Besides, he’s no Cary Grant. specials Boxing $1 /day Bold type $1 /day I Child Cane | AFTER SCHOOL child care needed M-F, [2:30 -s:3opm] for two children [ages 5 & 7], begin ning in August. Special Events Unfortunately for “Seattle,” Ryan merely repeats her performance as Sally, but with less depth—maybe she misses Harry. But the brush-stroked characters should be blamed on the screenplay, not on the actors. Nonetheless, “Seattle” is a nice sum mer romance that will make you laugh and cry and is in a different genre than most of the summer releases. But it wasn’t destined to be a “Harry Met Sally.” School Barrett said one of his long-term goals for the school system was to reduce classroom size. Burnette, who is a member of the Blue-Ribbon Task Force and has a child in the school system, said she has a vested interest in the system. “I’m also running based on my expe rience as a native of Chapel Hill and as one who has gone through the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System.” Burnette said she planned to ensure that the school system showed fiscal responsibility and encourage more com munity involvement in the schools. “I will personally recruit parents and community members to get actively involved in the school system,” she said. “I will work to guarantee that all children get a first-rate education in the district.” Burnette said a wide cross-section of the community already had supported her campaign, including the Orange County Greens, a local environmental party.
