8 i/The Daily Tar Heel/Thursday, July 29, 1993 Football practice set to begin Aug. 9 Staff report Football season is back. North Carolina begins preparations for the upcoming 1993 season next week, with freshmnen checking into fall camp Aug. 3 for physicals and testing. Upperclassmen return Saturday, Aug. 7, with practice beginning on the 9th. The players will work out twice daily in shorts for three days, then start dreaded two-a-days, with pads, August 12. Two-a-days last unit! classes begin Aug. 25. The defending Peach Bowl champion, UNC registered a 9- 3 mark last season, its fifth under head coach Mack Brown. Eight starters return on offense, five on defense. Brown hopes the dog days of August can yield some depth for his team. “We’ll use the first part of fall practice to solidify our two deeps,” Brown said. “Developing back-up help is one of our biggest goals. “We want to test our young secondary early,” he said. “Our offense is going to be a little different without Natrone (Means) and Randy (Jordan) at tailback.” UNC has its earliest season-opener ever this year, facing Southern Cal Aug. 29 at the Disneyland Pigskin Classic in Ahaheim, Calif. The Tar Heels have no major injuries heading into prac tice. Offensive lineman Curtis Parker and quarterback/punter Mike Thomas, who both underwent off-season surgery and missed spring drills, will be ready when drills begin. ofyr Mg (Far BM deadline 7 Tuesdays at Noon for Thursday's edition Announcements TOM ROBINSON’S yTCARRBOROJARMER'S WKRI<|T EATING DISORDERS ; Therapy Group FOR WOMEN WITH bulimia, chronic dieters, and otherwise "aggravated / eaters." Help Wanted Basketball schedule released Staff report The defending national champions won’t be taking it easy next year. UNC announced its 1993-94 men’s basketball schedule this week, and it appears again that the Tar Heels will face one of the toughest schedules in college basketball. North Carolina head coach Dean Smith will take his 33rd team into a schedule with 21 possible games against teams that participated in post-season play last season. That includes a possible 18 games against NCAA Tourna ment teams, depending on the outcome of the preseason National Invitational Tournament. The Tar Heels open the regular season Nov. 17 in the Smith Center against Western Kentucky in that tournament. The Hilltoppers, coached by Rick Pitino-disciple Ralph Willard, lost to Florida State in overtime in last year’s NCAA Sweet 16. Six other NCAA teams from a year ago California, Cincinnati, Kansas, Massachusetts, UC-Santa Clara and St. John’s—are in the preseason NIT, as well as postseason NIT champ Minnesota. “With an experienced team, it’s good to have a difficult schedule like this,” Coach Smith said. “We may well lose some games in the first part of the year, but hopefully that will help prepare us for March and post-season play.” The Tar Heels return four starters from the 34-4 team of 1992-93 leading scorer Eric Montross, point guard Der rick Phelps, forward Brian Reese and Final Four MVP CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Classified Display Private Party (Non-profit) $6/column inch per insertion Businesses (For-profit) $lO/column inch per insertion Announcements OFFICE ASSISTANT, part-time for South Square law office.
