Batty ®ar Bepl SPOBMIEFS NCAA probes Ole Miss For Athlete Recruitment University of Mississippi Chancellor Gerald Turner confirmed Wednesday that a routine investigation by the NCAA has led to some follow-up questions involving the recruitment of some Rebel athletes. Turner said Ole Miss has not received an official letter of inquiry and that “there is no massive investigation.” Turner would not specify any of the athletes involved, but said that the investi gations usually only come to schools who have been involved in the recruitment of top athletes. “They (the NCAA) are involved with a general follow-up relating to investigations with outstanding athletes," Turner told the Oxford Eagle. “The follow-ups are related to that.” The NCAA routinely checks out the recruiting of top high school athletes and transfers at all schools across the country, and Ole Miss has been involved with these types of questions before. “When they start that (process), one thing often leads to another,” Turner said. “There are a couple of things they are looking at. There are a couple of specific events they are following up on.” OleMissathleticdirectorWamer Alford was unavailable for comment Wednes day. Alford and other athletic department personnel were traveling to Auburn, Ala., where the Rebels open the 1993 football season Thursday night. Lendl Drops From Open Because of Knee Injury Ivan Lendl, a three-time U.S. Open champion and seeded 13th this year, quit during the third set ofhis first-round match today because of an injured knee. Lendl trailed Neil Borwick of Australia 4-6,6-4,3-1 on stadium court when he told the chair umpire he could not continue. “I came in with a bad knee and it was getting worse,” Lendl said. “I couldn’t push off on it and I didn’t see any point in playing.” Lendl said he apparently had strained a ligament, and that the injury was so bad Tuesday “I couldn’t play at all.” The 33-year-old from Greenwich, Conn., who has reached the quarterfinals at just two tournaments since May, also said that the injury was not career-threat ening. “It definitely has nothing to do with the future,” he said. This marked the first time Lendl failed to reach at least the second round at the Open, although it also was his third first-round exit at a Grand Slam tour nament this year. He was eliminated in the first round of the Australian and French opens, and in the second round at Wimbledon. Toronto 8, Oakland 3 OAKLAND, Calif. UNC Volleyball Team Counts on Newcomers BY RODNEY CLINE STAFF WRITER Inexperience the best word for de scribing the 1993 edition of the UNC vol leyball team. The Tar Heels lost five players to gradu ation from last year’s 19-14 squad. Enter six freshmen to replace them. “I try not to think about (the losses) and just deal with the team at hand now,” said head coach Joe Sagula, who is beginning his fourth season in Chapel Hill. “I don’t look at it as having to fill Amy Peistrup’sspot, I needtofillNancy Bragiel’s spot,” he said. “I know I have a position, such as outside hitter, and each person brings different qualities to that position and different strengths.” Each freshman has the potential to con tribute on the court this year, Sagula said. He pointed to defensive specialist/outside hitter Ashley Powers as one who should do so early. “Ashley comes in with a lot of good ball handling skills, she’s a great passer, and she has good defensive skills, ” Sagula said. “With those skills, she’s at the level of many of our returning players.” Two of UNC’s tallest players, 6-foot-2 Amber Willey and 6-0 Anissa Cronenberg, are also freshmen. They provide the Tar Heels with much-needed depth at the middle hitter position. “They’re very good blockers, and both are good net players,” he said. “We need them to develop into middle hitters for us. We were very weak there last year, so they add depth and strength for their size. We ’ve never had two incoming freshmen with their size before.” Rounding out the freshmen class are outside hitters Janet Duch and Karen Ranzer and setter Laura Gremillion. Gremillion and Ranzer are medical redshirts after each sat out last season with knee injuries. “(Gremillion) is doing a very good job in battling for the setting position (with sophomore Michelle Miller), ” Sagula said. The return of Gremillion has had a major impact on the team, according to junior outside hitter Katie Galloway. “The major difference in this year’s team is that we have two really competent set ters as opposed to just Amy Peistrup,” Galloway said. “They’llbecompetingwith each other all year, and that serves a better purpose for the team. There’ll always be a Jeff Reed opened the inning with a double to left and Steve Scaisone ran for him. Mike Benjamin sacrificed Scarsone to third before Martinez’ hit. Smoltz went seven innings, giving up six h donHwked four and struck out six. The Giants’ first run came in the fifth on a two-out double by Willie McGee and an REI single by Matt Williams, who was thrown out by left fielder Ron Gant at tempting to stretch his hit off the wall to a double. The Braves had gone ahead 2-1 against starter Bryan Hickerson in the sixth when Otis Nixon led off with a single, stole second and scored on Jeffßlauser’s double off the right-center field fence. The Braves had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a two-out walk to Fred McGriff, who took second on a wild pitch and scored on Terry Pendleton’s single. Pendleton, who had two hits offHickerson, is 7-for-7 this season off the left-hander and 9-for-13 in his career. Notes: The Giants recalled Patterson from his injury rehabilitation assignment with Class A San Jose and reinstated him i§f HIE. A member of the all-ACC fresh man team from a year ago, Kruse, an outside hitter, has shown significant im provement, Sagula said. “On the physical side, she has gotten _ stronger,” he said. “She’s hitting the ball heavier, much harder now. She’s also a lot - more knowledgeable about the college" game now, and that’s a valuable commod ity to have right now in a young team. “She’s going to be one of the key offen sive members of this team. I feel she’s ready for the challenge. ” The remaining upperclassmen include senior middle hitter Cindy Murray, junior middle hitter Sarah Ward, and junior out side hitter Colette Dingens. Along with Galloway, they will provide the leadership for the freshmen. “Allfourofthem, thejuniors and Cindy, have a vested interest in establishing a high level of criteria for this team, ” Sagula said. “They have played in ACC Tournaments and other intense matches in the past. They know what level we need to achieve to.” Murray said that teaching the UNC system to the freshmen was one key to the upcoming season. “We have all these new people, and it will take some time for them to learn the system here,” Murray said. “I think we will build up as the season goes on and they see how we work here at Carolina.” A second key to the season, according to Sagula, is the team’s defense. “We’ve got some good defensive play ers on this team,” Sagula said, “but we’ve got to see them adapt to the system and come together.” ' “You can have the best offensive team in the country,” Murray added, “butifyou can’t dig the ball, you’re not going to win the games.” To win this year, the Tar Heels will have to be play well in an exceptionally strong ACC and with anew scheduling format. Each team plays 14 conference games as opposed to seven in the past. “This is the best quality in the confer ence since it began,” Sagula said. “Of the eight teams (Wake Forest does not field a team), any of six could win the conference. “One of our goals is to finish in the top. two in the ACC. We want to prove some thing, and that means we’ve got to be consistent.” from the 60-day disabled list.... The Braves activated catcher Greg Olson and pitcher Pete Smith from the 15-day disabled list. Olson had an inflamed tendon of the right forearm and Smith had tendinitis of the right shoulder. ... The sellout crowd of 49,290 gave Atlanta a season franchise home attendance record of 3,101,768. It broke the previous mark of 3,077,400 set last season. Chicago 5, New York 3 NEW YORK Frank Thomas set a team record with his 38th home run, then drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning when he was hit by a pitch, sending Jack McDowell and the Chicago White Sox past the New York Yankees 5-3 Wednesday night. The White Sox, leading the AL West, won their fifth straight game. McDowell (21-7), leading the majors in victories, won for the ninth time in 10 decisions.
