2 Tuesday, September 7,1993 Almost 80 Students Hock to Join Newly Founded 007 Club BY ION GOLDBERG STAFF WRITER Sophomore Will Coward’s favorite James Bond portrayer is Sean Connery. Sophomore Shannon Tennant prefers Timothy Dalton. Tara Powell likes Roger Moore. Coward, Powell and Tennant and the 77 other members of the James Bond Fan Club at UNC will have the opportunity to debate ad nauseum about the best Bond portrayer and other Bond topics at the group’s first meeting in Student Union 224 Friday. “A lot of what we are going to do is up to themembers, ” said Davies, John Davies, president of the fan club. “The interest so far is largely watching movies, but some people have expressed interest in discussing books and actually understanding the historical context of Bond.” The club is the brain child of Davies and his former roommate David Liu. They came up with the idea last spring. “I’m a big James Bond fan myself,” Davies said. “I realize there’s a lot of Bond fans on campus. It’s an organization that SMOKING FROM PAGE 1 problems caused by smoking often begin to improve within a few weeks, Kunstling said. Despite this good news and the increased dangers smoking poses for women, many are not quitting. “I guess I could quit, but I’ve tried and I haven’t succeeded yet, ” said senior Debbie Brown. “I’m just not ready to quit yet. It’s hard on campus, because if you go to a party and there are 50 people there smok ing, you’re going to want a cigarette.” Gamer said that because she lived in TAR HEEL SPORTS SHORTS Wednesday, 9/8 Men’s soccer vs ECU 7 pm - Fetzer Friday, 9/10 Volleyball vs. Purdue - 7:30 Carmichael Fri., 9/10 & Sat, 9/11 Women’s Golf - Lady Tar Heel Invitational Tournament - all day at Finley Golf Course \ if ■ You’ve WSO set THE record \ l&ll YOU WANTED. AND NOW YOM’JfH SUPPOSED TO OPEN A BANK ACCOUW^^ m appeals to a lot of people.” Davies’ realization has proved correct. Thanks in part to two days of membership recruiting in the Pit, the group has ex panded to about 80 members. “We’re really pleased with our success in recruiting members,” Davies said. “It’s an organization that’s destined to do very well on this campus.” Part of the reason for the club’s popular ity is James Bond himself. “The club is appealing because a lot of people really like Bond,” said Tennant, secretary of the club. Davies added, “Most people who have joined so far ha ve been die-hard fans ofMr. Bond and really have a great understand ing of the character itself.” One of Davies’ gripes with other cam pus organizations is the lack of diversity among members. He promised this club would be different. “We like to think we’ve got a wide spread appeal, and we ha ve diversity in our numbers,” he said. “We can have intellec tual discussions about something we all hold dear to us. We are a very diverse organization.” So why is James Bond so popular? Why New York for six years and didn’t smoke, she felt she was not in much danger from smoking. “I’m getting the same number of noxious fumes. I’m young, I’m vital—l’m not too worried about health right now. “Besides, it takes a real woman to face lung cancer.” Women seem to have a harder time quitting than men, Kunstling said, possi bly because of physical differences. Sally Garrett of the N.C. division of the American Lung Association agreed with Kunstling. “It’s been my experience that women overall have a harder time quitting than men,” Garrett said. Nicotine withdrawal can cause hunger, which can lead to weight gain, irritability, insomnia, rapid pulse and nicotine cravings or “nic fits.” “I’ve had some patients become some what psychotic if they are suddenly forced to quit smoking, such as when they are admitted to the hospital,” Kunstling said. “People who do quit successfully usu ally have a reason of their own that moti vates them.” Vogt quit successfully in high school. “(Smoking) wasn’t what I wanted my “I admire the changes in James Bond,” Coward said. “He reflects the changes in society as well.” Junior Karl Shultz appreciates Bond for less philosophical reasons. “I liked ‘For Your Eyes Only’ because of the gadgets and cool cars,” he said. Sophomore Bonnie Smyre, historian of the club, said: “‘Thunderball’ is my favor ite. I like the special effects and the way the plot moves very quickly.” The only apparent reason the club could fail is the dastardly debate over who is the best James Bond. There already is fighting among the ranks. “I think Dalton’s the best,” Tennant said. “I respect him as an actor.” Davies disagrees. “Dalton is certainly the worst Bond ever,” he said. “He had very little flair fortheßond character. Roger Moore certainly had a lot of bad appear ances. George Lazenby is my favorite." Whetheryou like “Moonraker” or “Dr. No,” Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton, the James Bond Club might be for you. “We’d like to become one of the largest groups on campus,” Davies said. “The James Bond Fan Club is a club for the people.” lifestyle to be. It’s an unhealthy habit, and I try to lead a healthy lifestyle. I used to break all my mother’s cigarettes because I thought smoking was so bad for her. “I had nic fits for about four days. Then a few months later, smoking wasn’t really appealing anymore. I’m surprised I even started because it tastes so terrible.” With the recent discoveries of the dan gers of passive smoke, smokers who have not quit express ambivalence about the trend toward nonsmoking buildings. “I wouldn’t smoke around children or pregnant women or anyone who asks me not to smoke around them,” Brown said. Gamer said every building should in clude at least one smoking area or lounge. “Nonsmokers can just not go in there. Nonsmokers have rights too, but smokers shouldn’t be made to feel like such out casts. “Yes, I know I’m killing myself. I don’t need to be told that every day.” “LEARNING TO LEAD & FOLLOW” *+ A Guided Tour of Shabbat Services WHEN: September 7,14,21 i 5:00-6:00 PM JIT WHERE: Hillel, 210 West Cameron St. The Wachovia College Account.
