The Tar Heels, 4-0 after sweeping through last weekend’s UNC Volley Pre view, welcome three nonconference foes to Carmichael Auditorium. UNC will face Purdue tonight at 7:30, Florida on Satur day at noon and Michigan Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Florida will be one of the most highly regarded teams that UNC faces all season. The Lady Gators, 34-2 a year ago, enters play Saturday with a 3-0 record and an No. 8 national ranking, according to the Ameri can Volleyball Coaches Association poll. “Florida finished last year ranked third, ” said UNC coach Joe Sagula. “On that alone, we can expect a tough battle. We’re confident we can do well against them.” Purdue (3-0) and Michigan (2-1) both hail from the Big 10, one of the top two volleyball conferences in the country (along with the Pac-10), according to Sagula. “Michigan looks to be good,” Sagula said. “They beat Washington of the Pac -10, andtheironlylosswastoNo. 1 Stanford. Chicago Stadium Should See Wrecking Ball by Late ’9os THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO Calling it the “end of an era, ” the owner of the Chicago Blackhawks said Thursday 65-year-old Chicago Sta dium will be tom down, but may remain standing for the circus and ice shows until 1998. William Wirtz said Ringling Bros, and Bamum & Bailey Circus and the Ice Capades have leases to put on shows at the stadium through 1998. He said he is nego tiating with the shows to move the events to the United Center, which is being built across the street. “Eventually though, the old building will have to be tom down,” he said. “I don’t think it will be good to have two events going on at the same time.” Wirtz left little doubt about his senti ments about tearing down the stadium, Calvin and Hobbes TWS IT.' \ SEE TOVJ AU_ 1 THINK jm f\ 'ST 114 THROUGH TOMORROW.' Sophomore Kristin Kruse leads UNC with 3.27 kills per game. Sagula has several objectives for this weekend’s play. “We want to solidify the ACC as being a strong conference, but we want to help ourselves and impress the NCAA poll people," he said. “We’re playing tough competition. As we approach the ACC season, this weekend is an opportunity for us to learn who the Tar Heels are in 1993. “It’s still early, and it won’t make or break us. But playing well could really help us.” where he has seen the likes of ice skating stars Sonja Henie, Barbara Ann Scott, and great fighters such as Rocky Marciano, Joe Wolcott, Rocky Graziano and Tony Zale in action. “The end of an era is at hand,” he said. This is the final year Chicago Stadium will be home to the Blackhawks and the Chicago Bulls. Three Stanley Cup and three NBA champions have played in the building. Over the years, the stadium has been home not only to circuses and ice shows, but has been the site of several national political conventions. Wirtz said he is trying to bring both the Republican and Democratic national con ventions to Chicago. “What better place is there than Chi cago?” asked Wirtz. 23 Hide 24 —of passage 25 Consistency 26 God of love 27 Curves 28 Mend 30 Small pot 31 Whine 32 Sheridan and Sothern 33 ERA, e g. 35 Search out 36 Poems 37 Made illegal 41 Struck out 42 Adulterate 43 Per 44 Shoplifted 45 Strength 46 du jour 47 Arabian gulf 48 Curse 49 Twisted fiber 50 Region 51 Federal agents 53 Mil. sch. 54 Corrode | Rooms ROOM FOR SALE in male suite in Morrison. So why does head coach Anson Dorrance look worried? Because the Tar Heels’ next opponent are the No. 2 Portland Pilots, perennial bridesmaids who are ready to challenge North Carolina for the top spot. UNC will face Portland at 3 p.m. today at Method Road Stadium in Raleigh as part of the N.C. State Invitational Tournament. George Washing ton University will also compete in the tourney. “It’s a big con cern of mine,” said Dorrance of the match-up. “Port land is outstand ing.” Despite last weekend’s 7-0 thrashing of Maryland, Dorrance said that he is not satisfied with his team’s perfor mance. “Maryland played one of their best games ever against us, but you’d never be able to tell from the score,” he said. Dorrance said he was most pleased with the performances ofjuniormidfielder Tisha Venturini, who scored two goals in the first game, and the team’s freshmen. Two fresh men, Debbie Keller and Jane Byers, also scored against the Terps. “If we don’t play up to a higher level, this team is capable of beating us.” However, Portland coach Clive Charles is not so certain of his team’s prowess. “We’re still not ready to play with them, ” Charles said. “We’re a very young team. “There are a dozen teams that could claim to be No. 2, but there’s only one No. 1 and that’s North Carolina.” Charles expressed concern over the loss of Tiffeny Milbrett, last year’s leading scorer. Milbrett, who had 30 goals, is redshirting this season to prepare for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The last time the Tar Heels were ranked No. 1 and faced No. 2? UNC decked sec ond-ranked Stanford 5-0 last fall. UNC will play George Washington at 2 p.m. Sunday its second game of the weekend. When asked about facing the Colonials, Dorrance relaxed. “They don’t have the experience that we have, so they don’t have the firepower that we have,” he said. Still, the Tar Heels are champions be cause they don’t take any opponent lightly.
