ullfp Satly aar 31ppI soccer FROM PAGE 1 month, started the scoring just 8:06 into the game with a header off a Keri Sanchez comer kick. “(Venturini) looked to be lOOpercentto me,” head coach Anson Dorrance said. “She’s changing the point of the attack so well for us right now. “The thing I liked about (Venturini’s) play is, obviously, she’s dominant in the air. 1 think she demonstrated that on her comer kick goal.” The next goal came when midfielder Danielle Egan crossed the ball to the front of the goal. Senior forward Mia Hamm, who was directly in front of W&M goal keeper Maron Rojas, skipped over the ball and let it slide to Rita Tower, who touched the ball to the back of the net. Although UNC would only need the two goals to seal the win, it got insurance tallies from Debbie Keller and Hamm. With only a few minutes remaining in the first half, defender Zola Springer sent a long serve into the penalty box. Freshman forward Keller trapped the pass and shot the ball past Rojas from 12 yards out. William & Mary’s only goal was scored on a penalty kick with one minute left in the first half. A UNC foul was called when Tribe forward Coleen Dejong got tangled up with Tar Heel goalkeeper Shelley Fin ger and defender Sanchez. Hamm scored UNC’s fourth and final goal on a free kick just outside the penalty box. A Tribe defender took down midfielder Angela Kelly 12 minutes into the second half. The referee signaled for a direct kick, but the Tribe defense must have mistaken the call for an indirect kick. As Hamm crushed the ball into the net, goalkeeper WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FROM PAGE 14 has got to have North Carolina on their minds because they’ve got everybody com ing back,” said Florida State coach Marynell Meadors. Some have been hit worse than others. Georgia Tech, for example, lost its entire starting five. “Besides Carolina, almost everybody has had major losses,” said Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors. “I felt like not only did we lose numbers, but we lost key players in the conference.” Virginia lost twin towers Heather and Heidi Burge and playmaker Dena Evans to graduation. The trio of Susannah Matsen, Karen Godlock and Blake Phillips is making an unexpected impact on the eighth-ranked Tar Heel squad. Matsen, whose parents run marathons, took up the sport at age nine, competing in road races and Junior Olympics. A Morehead Scholar from Seattle, she took off one month in the summer to attend the National Outdoor Leadership School. Spending a month at NOLS interrupted her training, and she did not expect to be able to make an immediate impact on the team. “My goal was to be in the top seven,” said Matsen, the team’s No. 1 runner. “I guess I just got in shape quickly.” Matsen won her first collegiate meet, the Tar Heel Invitational, and has been the team’s most consistent finisher. “I was seriously injured for two-and-a halfyears,” saidMatsen. “I had shin splints, stress fractures that just wouldn’t go away. ” Although she was able to mn competi tively for all four years of high school, Matsen was forced to modify her training CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Roommates FEMALE PREFERRED to share 2 BR apt. $240/mo + 1/2 utilities. 493-7527. Last year with George and Henrik we played great defense, and the team was very close. “It’s going to be difficult to replace that kind of leadership and experience. Matsen thinks the years ofbeing injured kept her motivated. “I missed it so much,” she said. Matsen’s role model is runner Patti Sue Plummer. Plummer, a miler and 3,000- meter runner, is a practicing lawyer as well as a 1992 Olympian. “She’s not just a runner,” Matsen said. “I try to run for fun, because a lot of people get really stressed out about it. It becomes something that manages them.” Karen Godlock, a three-time North Carolina class 1-A/2-A State Champion from Polk County, has placed in the Tar Heel top five in every meet. “Karen is such a natural runner, ” senior Julie Armour said. “1 can’t see her burning out.” Godlock says she is making the adjust ment from high school to college well. Relatively unchallenged through fouryears of track and three years of cross country, Godlock is unaccustomed to running with a team. “The big transition is I get to run with a group of people,” she said. The self-effacing Godlock is not one to make predictions about her performance. “I just do whatever God enables me,” she said. Godlock is enjoying getting used to her the upper division. "We talk to each other while we’re racing.” The third member of the freshman class who has contributed to the Tar Heels’ record success this season is Blake Phillips. . Phillips, who began running m the ninth grade and attended private school in Win- 2 ston-Salem, was North Carolina’s seventh . finisher at the State Championships at' Western Carolina. She is probably the most surprised of the freshmen at her success this season. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to run this well,” Phillips said. Coming from such a small school where shehad only hercoach to train with. Phillips is also glad to have a team. She appreciates the team’s fun outlook. “We talk and laugh,” she said. Armour characterizes this year’s crop of freshmen as laid back, yet serious about running. “They’re not stressed out,” she said. “They’re taking the pressure well, they’re adjusting well, and they're running so awesome.” TheNorthCarolinafreshmenarehappy; to be able to contribute this early in their college careers, but they are not afraid to look beyond this season. “It’s fun to improve, to dream about faster times,” Matsen said. “I’m really ex- \ cited about our possibilities.” Wallace and Jeff Mclnnis in UNC’s vaulnted freshman class, took rookie hon ors. Other candidates include Duke’s Joey Beard and Maryland’s Keith Booth. Smith recognized the immense talent of his incoming class. “You would anticipate the three freshmen being in the first nine (players who play),” he said.
