33fp Sail}} ®ar Brel Grimsley’s solo home run lifts baseball over UNC-W STAFF REPORT Using a Richie Grimsley home run in the top of the ninth inning, the North Carolina baseball team rallied for a 8-7 road win over UNC-Wilmington at Brooks Field on Wednesday. UNC-W took control early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. But the Tar Heels (22-16) answered, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and eventually taking a 7-5 Softball faces Seminoles in final ACC challenge BY FORREST EBER STAFF WRITER One year and one squad have seen a lot of rhan g p< In that span, North Carolina’s softball team has done a 180- degree turnaround. Last year at this time UNC (17-26, 24 in the ACC) was wrapping up the conference regular season championship and a 12th winning season in 13 tries. This year’s team will almost certainly be the second Tar Heel softball squad to finish under the .500 mark, and any thoughts of duplicating last year’s title run vanished after an 0-8 start to the season. The Tar Heels will play their last conference game prior to the ACC tournament today at 2 p.m. at Finley Field against Florida State (31-14-1,5-1). The road to this year’s ACC Tournament title will likely run straight through the Seminoles, who are on course to win the ACC regular season title. FSU has cruised through the ACC portion of its schedule, winning its first five conference games before dropping a 6-3 decision to Virginia on April 6. The Seminoles will provide a stem test, one UNC needs to pass to gain confidence going into the Tar Heel Invitational (April 11-13) and the ACC tournament (April 17-19). Though FSU poses one of the more potent offenses that UNC pitchers Brandy Arthur and Jen Klesaris have faced this season, pitching has led FSU to the majority of its 31 wins. Leading the way all season has been Seminole hurler Kristy Fuentes, one of the premiere pitchers in the ACC. Fuentes has dominated opponents to the tune of a 21-6 record and 1.19 ERA, holding foes to a. 194 batting average against her. Last weekend she threw a perfect game against Virginia, her sec ond no-hitter of the year. UNC has dropped three of its last four, with its offense scoring a paltry eight runs. The Tar Heels must produce to compete with the Seminoles, whose offense is averaging near Saily ®ar Hrrl Summer Jobs EUROSPORT Fabled Soccer Traders SUMMER JOBS GET YOUR SUMMER job liiwd up now before exams! Teasley, of Frederick, Md., averaged 27.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game as a senior at St. John’s at Prospect Hall high school. Teasley, rated the No. 1 recruit in the nation by Blue Star magazine, was named The Associated Press All-Star Player of the Year as a junior. Teasley chose North Carolina over Virginia and Penn State. “We’re honored to have such an out ly four runs a game. Six Seminoles arejatting over .298, led by Misty Molins (.393) and Myssi Calkins (.376). The Tar Heels must gain momentum going into the ACC tournament if they have any dreams of advancing to the NCAAs. A win against powerful Florida State could prove to be that momentum.
